Tbh, I think it plays a part but Newcastle are able to get players. if a player is more interested in londons nightclubs then we cant really afford to be carrying a jack wilshere type anyway
I think Newcastle have much the shame issues as us. However they have been better in the transfer market picking up relative unknowns and making them better players, but as soon as a bigger club shows an interest they are off...

Yep. We tried to attract players at the "next level" but for the most part they'd only come here for the money and had zero motivation/care for the club. The exception that proves the rule is M'Vila who seemed to genuinely love it here and then we lost him by haggling over a fee.....before spending the money on a complete waster instead. Typical of SAFC under Short/Congerton/Bain.

Build something special, even if it has to start in league one, where the atmosphere is fantastic and everyone fights for each other and as we progress up the leagues stick to the philosophy that we ONLY sign players who want to come.

Look at the success Burnley have had the last few seasons by having a team that fights for each other. It may well eventually see them relegated but that's no different to any other in the Also Rans PL. I certainly won't be shouting for big money signings if we get back to the PL. Will happily accept team players.

Another thing we must install and stick to is a team bonus system.

We had many a debate, always respectful, which is what it should be about and how it should be.
Your feelings about Short were clear, and what you have done since he’s gone is embraced our current situation, unlike some that were anyone but Short then when we have anyone but Short are still twisting.
I like mr positive @Nelson! :)
Haway

Glad you approve @janey !! I also enjoy not being angry/depressed every time i think about my football club! ha.

I am 100% serious when I say I'm much happier starting over with a new squad in league one under the new lot than I would have been for us to stay up and have Short stick around. Their approach has been spot on and I'm willing to give the the benefit of the doubt if and when things don't quite pan out every time. There might well be some rocky patches ahead but I think they've got a much better understanding of what is needed largely because they understand football.

If they can get to the point where they truly "get" SAFC and we're climbing back up the leagues it could be special. At times over the last few years I've looked back on the 1998-2002 period and wondered "how do we ever gat back to that? players who care and will give everything they've got because they love being here"....I think we're starting to put the building blocks down for exactly that.

If we get beat of Charlton this place will be a nightmare like! :D

all those unknown french internationals- i think most premier league clubs have the same problem, i think its only ever the london and lancashire clubs that benefit from location, and thats generally when its a has been who cant be arsed to move house.I would say the problem is more to do with players not wanting to move to bottom half mid table sides without being paid daft money. The way round it is to be systematic in the way you approach transfers and not get a reputation for offering daft money- im pretty sure there were agents who rubbed there hands whenever an SAFC representative gave them a call.
I think we've been doing it for a while at least- the academy, whether it was because of shorts policies or in spite of, seems to have been picking up a lot of really good players over the last two or three years. added to the drop in league it looks like we can use it to start from scratch (which is what we are doing really and its what we've needed)

They've generally been more ambitious and better payers too.

@joop you have failed in your task, not only did you not track him you allowed him to end up in Gateshead :)
Well don’t blame me, he was obviously too busy singing and doing keepy ups while driving that he missed his turning!
Either that or he freaked out at being chained to your dungeon wall tonight.

Yep. You have to swallow your pride and take the reality of being a "Stepping stone" on the chin.

Look at Wycomb. They seem gutted this lad is leaving but also happy he's kicking on and grateful they had him for a couple of years. Would it be the end of the world if we get to watch players who go on to be world class, even if it means losing/replacing them every couple of years?....especially if we're also raking in inflated fees.

Not at all. I'd be happy to do that if it allowed us to move up the leagues and not struggle in the PL with the odd cup run. The problem is in the past we've sold the better players who we've maybe been reliant on and not replaced well at all. There's a balance to be had like as you can't sustain the level of sales Southampton have had, but certainly I think producing our own or buying clever and then selling clever is the only way we're likely to be in and stay in the PL anytime soon.

Leicester is a good example. Won the league and immediately lost Kante to Chelsea. They did put their foot down about Mahrez and Vardy as they knew losing all three would likely mean relegation. They also saw the writing on the wall with Huth/Morgan and replaced well.

Balance, like you say.

Fairly certain that’s the shell garage on A19 about 3 miles or so after leaving A1

If he’s coming up A19 he’s not in Gateshead

It does say Topcliffe like and Topcliffe is about 2/3 miles on the A168 or whatever it is which is a link road from the A1 to the A19 proper just before Thirsk. there's a garage there as well, though I've not been in it. And yeah A19 to Gateshead doesn't make sense.

I've been to topcliffe, in my youth

Alien area mind Luke, if you are reading

The next photo uploaded to that Instagram story is him overlooking the Tyne bridge from a balcony in the Hilton.
Hadn’t seen that, strange route unless he’s called into AOL or SOL

Definitely that garage, it’s the 1st one you come to after leaving A1
