MP takes on Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley over his 'exploitation' of the club

To be fair to Ashley, would you give a manager millions to spend on players when he won’t commit himself to the club. Benitez is a money grabber and no way will he walk away from a multi million pound contract, he never has and it’s not because of loyalty.

When he walks away in 10 months, the new manager will want his own players brought in and Ashley will be expected to stump up again. Only problem will be, all the decent players bought by previous managers will have already be sold and all that will be left is Benitez’s buys, and who will get the blame when they are sold at a loss?

Benitez signed his contract last time based on guarantees that were in place that via clever accounting (putting ‘erroneous contracts’ in their entirety into a full years accounts) haven’t been completely fulfilled.

Benitez is absolutely right not to take Ashley on his word given his previous behaviour.

While I do see you argument (and it is a logical one) given Ashley’s reputation Benitez cannot blindly trust him enough (rightly imo) to sign it.

Also, it’s not as if every penny spent on players by a manager that isn’t there 12 months later is completely wasted shown by the volume of manager movement every year.

It's a combination of promotion bonuses sanctioned by the owner supporting the manager and future wages costs being written off for players the manager has ostracised and has no use for (again by an owner supporting the manager).

Why do you continue to refuse to acknowledge that the spend has been over and above what has come in since benitez arrived as demonstrated by those figures?

Will the figures go back in for players that leave the club before these ‘future wages’ are due? I’ve never known any club use this as an accounting procedure for out of favour players. Do you?

Also, bringing wages into it as a proof of backing the manager is a bit disingenuous as it’s an ongoing cost and I’ve rarely (if ever) seen it used as an evidence base to praise/criticise managers. As far as I am aware Rafa Benitez doesn’t discuss contract terms with players.

I read this, this morning with complete disbelief

They're wasting House of Commons time discussing the unwashed and Ashley?

Wonder if it's worth a game of mag bingo regarding cliches.

It's all part of the money being spent though isnt it. That's the whole point that you are ignoring. A significant amount of it on players he hasn't then wanted to use who you can't get rid of - the £5m fee for Selz, £4m for lazar etc etc. Both now can't be shifted because of their wage demands. Those were both Benitez picks, no?

Newcastle are bordering on Liverpool levels of spiritual sensitive masturbating about their special club.

It's even worse because at least Liverpool are like that because of their fantastic history, former glories and tragedies.

The Mags have an inflated sense of what their football club is . A special breed, i've never seen anything like it. So Mike Ashley has used NUFC to further Sports Direct as a brand? And what? Commercialism is part of football.

Going on like he's personally raped their club or murdered Alan Shearer or something

As for Rafa, he took the Newcastle job on knowing the structure. Suddenly he's their latest scorned messiah #IFRAFAGOESWEGO Go where?
Go to watch it on TV or at the pub to give Ashley even more money

I'm not ignoring it at all, just saying it's not a usual football accounting practice (that I have seen) nor is factoring the whole of the contract value into your annual 'transfer budget'.

We'll have to see whether outgoing players that were part of this 'erroneous contracts' practice wages are filtered back in next year (Mbemba, Mitrovic). Going on Ashley's previous, I'm not holding my breath.

Keep it simple then - Cash went from about £2m to minus £8m, plus loans increased by £15m.

That's £25m in cash in simple terms that Benitez has spent over and above what has been generated. That's an owner backing a manager.

That £25m would be in a profit if it weren’t for this, conservatively, £30m ‘erroneous contracts’ policy though.

Plus Benitez has given Ashley the platform to earn more revenue by getting the club promoted so in my mind (maybe a bit biased) has earned the backing that is suggested.
