England’s all time best ODI XI

interesting podcast this week on the Analyst. Hughes, Mann and Emburey pick their all time best side. Clearly they have to level it given the game has changed so much.

I won’t post the side they picked in case you want to listen

I find it hard to look past the current lot, I get the argument for changing eras, and its hard but the reality as people like Bairstow, Roy, Buttler, are fitter than any batsman we have ever had, hit more shots, more 6s, better strike rates

Obviously if older players played in this time they might be doing that, but they weren't

The current era of ODI batting is the best it’s been as a whole, but the bowling is still lacklustre and although many would disagree, KP would still be in my best ever XI

Indeed. But it has to reflect the times

Spoiler for those who want to see it

trescothick
Bairstow
Gooch
Root
KP
Buttler
Flintoff
Botham
Emburey
Rashid
Gough

Others debated at length were Stokes, Morgan, Colly, Swann and a few others that I can’t remember

Agree on the bowling, although I think we have 2 excellent spinners

Plunkett has a ridiculously good strike rate too

KP was a much better test batsman than a one day one, IMO anyway

Bloody hell.

Emburey!!!

He was a good but not great bowler. As a spinner Underwood and Swann was way way ahead - but this is ODI I get it, but a worse bowler is preferred ahead of two greats!

No space for the only man to ever lift an international white ball trophy for England?

I find these sorts of things completely pointless anyway. As has been said time and again, the game has changed that much making the discussion utterly futile.

He was mentioned. But hard to argue he replaces any of those selected

Of course it’s pointless, but was a vaguely interesting 40 mins
