Bairstow continuing to keep wicket?

Who's the better keeper? Don't remember Bairstow making too many mistakes over the last 12 months.

Does that include when we bat 2nd?

interesting stat.

All 5 of his test centuries have occurred in the first innings of the match, i.e. before he has kept wicket

Coincidence?

Maybe - it is usually more difficult batting second innings. How many of his test centuries have been scored in games when he hasn't kept wicket?

First innings of the match only. He’s never made a century after having kept

See above

I don’t know on the second point

If they don't think he's a far superior keeper he should lose the gloves then. Finding more players score big runs in the top 6 is the priority for this team at the moment.

Never notice Buttler being poor behind the stumps in ODI's

This was mentioned on sky cricket yesterday during the rain break, mentioned Alec Stewart averaged about 35 with the gloves and 45 without them and Sangakkara something like 40 odd with the gloves and 68 without them.

For balance you should also add the fact he's usually in against a relatively new ball. That'll have an impact. Not like he's ever in at 300-3 to take advantage against an old ball and tired bowlers.

If you reach the conclusion that he shouldn't keep wicket, who do you give the gloves to? Cause I get the impression he loves having the gloves and it's fair to say he's improved massively since he first got them - so it's clear he's working at that part of his game.

On another note, I'd still have him at 6, with Stokes at 5.

Of course

I don’t have a particular view, just thought it was an interesting stat

I'd be a bit more precise tbh, finding big runs from the top 3 etc.

Giving the gloves to buttler with bairstow batting at 5 is blindingly obvious imo and has been for some time. All this nonsense about how he likes having gloves is pathetic, he has to do what’s best for the balance of the side. There are very few keepers who managed to combine both roles whilst batting top 5.

Stewie would have been a world class opener if they could have balanced the side without forcing him to keep wicket ahead of Jack Russell

To be honest I'm quite open-minded about it, if the second coming of Alec Stewart surfaced in the next 12 months then I'd get him in.

However Bairstow has said a few times in interviews he wants to keep and others have said he works very hard on improving his keeping.

I imagine this debate will rumble on all summer.

Why not just bat him 6 and find another specialist batsman instead of Buttler.

Sorry we have none. Never known and England side as weak for batting options.

Even that dross of the 90s had more options.

I don’t think Buttler is a Test Match batsman and I don’t think Stokes is consistent enough to bat any higher than 6.
Obviously this doesn’t help the Bairstow situation, but I don’t think it’s the biggest worry at the moment.
An opener, number 4, a decent spinner and a potent pace attack are more concerning imho

It's a no brainer, he's worth more to us as a batsman than a wicket keeper and he seemingly can't do both well.
