That's the issue. All the opposition had to do was bowl a tight fourth stump line and he was a walking wicket. He was dropped because of a clear and obvious technical flaw. I haven't seen much of him since but his ecord since was really poor until last month- if hes worked on his technique successfully in this area then all well and good.

He's an intelligent lad so he'd be aware of the fault and worked on it. With the help of his father back home unlike the clowns we have as coaches for England.

Is this anything more than wishful thinking?

Remember he didn't put his fantastic year down to anything more than a new mental outlook and being relaxed having settled down with his girlfriend.

I'f like to see him do well though as an ex-Durham.

It's wishful thinking undoubtedly but equally He's undoubtedly recognised that weakness and adopted the Ottis mantra "Don't get bitter, get better".

He is the option I would have chosen but in all honesty an opener who just about gets his 1000 runs in a season but no more on the best batting pitch in the country isn't someone who is smashing the door down to get in or give you a real belief that they can make the step up. Lyth had had a magic couple of years when he was picked as did Robson, Jennings and Hameed had massive years and Stoneman had collectively been the biggest scorer in county cricket over the previous 5 years. All of those came in, weren't good enough and in most cases went backwards since. I think the cupboard is dry but Burns out of the options available probably deserved the go.

Maybe - but neither Gubbins or Burns have done enough to face outraged by it. Gubbins has started this season well but averaged 24 in the county championship last season (Jennings averaged 25 in Div 2). Imagine being a serious contender for a test place after those records? I think Burns probably deserves a go but clearly now he will have to wait.
 
I'd have given Stoneman one last chance. Unless he was given an indication of that in the last match its a bit harsh as most of the others were poor and have been for a while. Now we have 6 weeks of 1 day stuff to assess others test match batting credentials.
