Cheif Scout gone - Nixon

The figures maybe slightly out but it goes to show that investing in the academy and keeping it going is paramount

Totally agree there - it just hasn't produced what it should have and the Pickford money which we won't have most of it yet has skewed everything to look rosier than it is.

I posted this on another Academy thread a few weeks ago. I know the scout that cover North West Durham - he is in his 70's and relies on his car to get about. He gets paid a mileage rate by the club to drive his car, but no wage, he makes money if a kid makes it to the U23s and more if he gets into the first team. The scout had a fall and badly bruised his ribs, arm and side so he could not drive - the club would not give him any help or even physio so for quite a time he was laid up and no-one from the academy was covering NW Durham. In that time the Mags picked up three potential kids. Because he was laid up the club tried to get out of paying him his fee which he gets if a kid he puts in gets to the first team, which I believe was 3k.

I dont doubt this at all. A good mate of mines little lad signed up with Newcastle and the little lad is Su derland mad, but they way they treated the kids there compared to us there was no comparison. He even had trials at boro and was treated better there too. He was only 7 years old, i know this is only hpw one kid was treated but the family were desperate to sign up with sunderland and tbey just felt they couldnt and did it for the bairn

Can you give specific examples?

Boro have got very good reputation for looking after the kids in their youth set up.

10 million to set up and 1.5 million a year to run so 32.5 million. Not sure about the 60 million figure - 30 million for Pickford 15 million for Henderson and 5 million for Waghorn so profit of 17.5 million.
Discount for time value of money and its more than that. Or is it tbe other way around. Never used that shit since I did my exams

The quality of signings has been that poor recently, I doubt they’d be cracking targets mind.

How much comes down to funds and desperation though? We end up missing out on most top targets and sign any fucker later on, usually known to the manager or a managers agents. Just like under Mick McCarthy - the famous Andy Gray scouting report from Kevin Richardson saying he done fuck all and not up to PL level and a week or so later he's ours.

I'd not batter a eyelid if they get rid of all coaching/scout staff and started from scratch.

This ^^^ Fresh start from top to bottom, it's well over due. The club has been rewarding failure far to long and I for one will be glad of the last remaining remnants of the Short era seen gone. It's never nice for anyone to lose their job's but unfortunately the position we're in we have to cut accordingly.

So did Nixon actually say he was sacked cos of his transfer targets?

Probably all journeyman free transfers.
