Why would anyone be sent to prison?

Have you never heard the expression 'caveat emptor' .... the books of any company are opened for the proposed buyer.

If the buyers accountants miss things that's the fault of the buyer, not the seller.

This kind of accountant earns huge fees for being able to find 'hidden' debts etc.

The point being that if it's in the books a firm of accountants will not miss that kind of money, if your mates mam the book keeper was going through the accounts she wouldn't miss it either never mind a firm of top notch accountants. When they went through the books they will have calculated every bank loan, every players contract, every penny outstanding to other clubs, any bonuses owed, every invoice outstanding. If the club owed the local newsagents an outstanding invoice for the morning papers they will have known about it.

If there was an eight figured sum that they didn't know about it would have had to of been something off book, illegal in which case when they discovered it someone would be going directly to jail without passing go.
I think it's absurd to think that Ashley could purchase the club for a 100+ million with the accounts missing 100+ million of secret debt. It would be like buying a house, going to view it 10 times, paying for a full in depth survey and nobody noticing there was no floors in or roof on. Your talking like nigh on half the value of the club.

I've no idea who is lying.

Let's be honest if it's a choice between Shepherd and Ashley, as to who's lying, you're stuck between a rock and a hard place
