Breaking news from : Steve Smith and David Warner have been given 12-month bans by Cricket Australia. Smith will face media on landing in Sydney. Smith will cancel his IPL contract and go overseas elsewhere for a time. Warner will play IPL but not captain. No word on Bancroft.

My take on it, for what it’s worth

- 12 months seems harsh, given Du Plessis and Atherton charges
- I’m surprised it is as big as it is. Don’t get be wrong, it’s wrong and bans should be handed out. But it’s over what was a grey line.
- they are f***ing idiots
- they are f***ing hypocrites, and it feels like the straw that broke the camels back
- it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of twats so I have zero sympathy
- I feel for Bancroft
- there is no way in hell that the bowlers weren’t aware
- there is no way in hell Lehmann wasn’t aware.

The whitewash surrounding Lehman is strange to say the least.

As for the length of the ban, this is Australia portraying their holy than though virtues and ultimately setting a precedent for this sort of thing. The very thing that their cameras will spend more time looking for in opposition teams than they will at the match.

He will miss Home tours against India and Sri Lanka I think and has dodged coming to England for the ODI’s.

To an extent.

I’ve been surprised by just how much the Aussie press and public have slammed them. That (and the international opinion) has driven the ban as much as the holier than thou attitude

I think it has been like a pressure cooker waiting for the lid to be released. It is clear that they are extremely disliked universally and the reaction seems to be akin to that, kicking fuck out of somebody and sending them down for 20 for a slapped arse and suspended sentence type of thing.

Can you have zero sympathy yet feel for Bancroft?

Ah ok my mistake. Agree it feels very much like the straw that broke the camels back and agree with the rest of your post, not sure I think 12 months is harsh though. I think it’s appropriate, taking everything else into account.
Yeah maybe. Relatively is what I meant I guess.

It’s been interesting listening to the outrage, and at times it has not been joined up. Vaughan wittering about how the use of Murray mints is ok because it’s saliva and there is no proof that sugar helps was random (especially given Trescothicks book).

Don’t get me wrong, the Aussies are a pretty horrible and hypocritical team, but the outrage has been hypocritical as well

Spit without a mint still works so i get his inference but he rambled a bit. Certain washing powders seem to make shining better as well but i dont think the ICC will ban Fairy Non-Bio on cricket whites :lol:

Well yes. But Trescothick tried to find the perfect sweet for the job, so it’s an artificial help. And not the same as just spit...

I reckon the bans are fine but someone in the coaching set up must also take the fall and that looks to me like Lehmann.

The reason for the punishment is to dissuade others in the future and to that end .....

The next thing is cricket must get together and be absolutely clear about what is and is not acceptable and all team must understand the management must take responsibility for wrong doing by the team.

Also the sledging thing must be controlled. Maybe a few words is fine but it sometimes it goes far too far and no one is called out for it.

Expect he'll sign for Surrey in the next week or so to play all formats for this season...... Would you have him @TheRey ;)

Pretty much covered it for me, except the Bancroft bit - whether he was forced into it in a sense or not, he should be a strong enough character to say no.
