Bobby Robson

Shearer got him sacked, told fat Freddy he was over the hill and that was it.

I think people here are overblowing their fans wanting him out,I think they just felt torn about it,but some thought it was time to move on. From what I remember. He did some brilliant transfer business for them mind,I think it's easy to forget that.

What I remember is, they had two excellent seasons under him. The third season they struggled a bit, had a few dodgy results and there was growing feeling from the fans that age was a factor. It had only been a few years since Keegan had walked out on them when Robson got the job and the chairman at the time flippantly demanded champions league football even saying the uefa cup was the poor man's cup. When it looked increasing likely they weren't going to finish in a European place, Freddie shepherd believed the fans calling him too old and sacked him. Leaving him gutted.
Never understand why they built a statue of him though, it seemed more of guilt for the sacking and building it was more reconciliation than merit for winning any silverware

Top top man sir Bobby. Was treat dreadfully at Newcastle. My vehicle body repair business did the work for lady Elsie really nice lady. She told me they took two apprenticeship players to live with them as they had no way to stay for a long period of time. Can you imagine any top manager doing that now.
could she not afford a proper cosmetic surgeon like?

Langley Park iirc. I have some family there and I remember my uncle telling me that Bobby Robson's dad used to run the Sunderland supporters branch there years ago
Me dad told me he was from Sacriston and then moved to Langley Park. He reckoned he lived in the same street as him.
Charlaw Terrace iirc

You are right yes but a lot of mags love re-writing history. Wasn't there a big belief amongst Newcastle fans at the time that he was 'past his sell-by date', and they required a young vibrant manager to get a tune out of a divided bunch of young players ? They ended up with Souness.
Yes this is true.

We all loved bobby but there was a definite belief by the end of the season we finished fifth that it was time to move on. Not because we’d finished 5th per se, but because he seemed to have lost his touch, and lost the dressing room particularly, with our team having a nucleus of young players who didn’t seem to be playing for him eg bellamy, Dyer, jenas, etc. The feeling was, that he should be moved upstairs over summer, into a director of football role, and that a new manager should take over.

That said, once the season started, even though we started poorly, there was no great fan desire to sack him. And it was still a surprise. We had all wanted him to stay as part of the club, and a “move upstairs” was really what the majority wanted. So there was definitely a feeling that he should be moved on.

Anyone Newcastle fan who says otherwise is a revisionist.

We had no idea, however, that we would get Souness. Definitely a case of better the devil you know. The whole thing was a disaster and in retrospect we should have stuck with Bobby. But we thought we would get a proper manager. Not bloody souness.

Regarding the spitting - it was before my time, but I’m pretty sure it was a single fan who was cross with Robson for not picking one of our players (Keegan)for England. A single fan, and we’ll before he became our manager.

You shouldn't have bothered to be honest.

Nothing wrong with that ? He was manager of our fiercest rivals....whsts wrong with that ? He passed away and to a man away at Celtic we shouted his name.. . Sunderland supporters are the best !

When the lyrics are around him being senile and pissing pants it’s a bit in bad taste like. Stop trying to make out that we’re holier than thou and better than anyone else. We’re exactly the same as anyone - largely very good with a load of undesirables with a penchant for being *****.

Rumour has it he tried to flog Shearer to Liverpool.

He also had him on the bench in his last game iirc

I remember the song and there was fuck all wrong with it. It wasn't half as bad as say calling all Mackems paedophiles etc which is exactly what the scum do...they must forget about the paedo ring that was uncovered in Newcastle last year ;)

Ask Alan Brazil and Gatesy about the score he would check first after the Ipswich games!

Like many of our dads and grandparents he went to BOTH Roker Park and SJP as it was the only way to watch football.
He was a football man from Durham. The geordie nation rewrote history again, what is any local manager going to say about a local club they ,manage how fical are some people.

its a fair and balanced reply but it doesn't change the facts. The majority of fans wanted him out, many very vocal on wanting him out and this was after a couple of very good years. Robson died believing he was very badly treated by NUFC fans as he himself states. Then you built a statue.

There is loads of rewriting of history on both sides, he was never spat on at SJP, never, not once. He was by 1 newcaslte fan when managing England.
There was rumblings of discontent by a section of Newcastle fans but no big demonstrations, we certainly boo'd after the Belgrade game (I think it was partizan who knocked us out, would have to check, memory aint what it used to be) but alot of that was at the team.
I wont deny that a section wanted a new manager though.

Reading about him on here sometimes you would think that hated the man.
Which is wrong and a lie said enough times becomes tje truth.
But hey ho, it doesnt really matter that much anyway, I am not a white knight here to right all wrongs.

Oh I was also on about the original post not mag in peace, as I agree with his post.

Best manager that has and ever will come from the NE. Was treat disgracefully by both sets of fans, sickening really. He was an old, frail man and deserved respect from all. It was below the belt what our fans sang about him, even if he was a mags manager there’s no excuses.
