Rumours about our nearest & dearest trying to get into the Wolves game

Hilarious this mind. Barca had won La Liga ahead of Real Madrid who won the Champions League that year and came to SJP on match day one with all to play for and lost. I’d imagine most Sunderland fans were expecting us to get our backsides kicked good and proper in the lead up to the game; I certainly was.

Uh huh. Suppose that is something to cling on when you could be closer to Gateshead than you are to us.
Oh dear......biting more than i thought. Guess it will always blot your copybook.

Still......you beat us once.

Back in the day.

They went on to win la liga (probably helped by their lack of European matches after the group stage since they came bottom in a kind looking group and didn't even have UEFA Cup to worry about), they hadn't won la liga when they played you. And yes, no one is saying it wasn't a great win, no one is saying it wasn't a shock, they're saying it is often made out to be like beating the current Barca when in reality it was more like beating Chelsea or Man United. An unexpected win against a very good, but not outstanding, side

I stand corrected they had finished 2nd to Real Madrid (2 points behind on 90 points and over 100 goals scored) and went on to win La Liga the year we beat them ahead of that year’s Champions League winners. It wasn’t like beating Man U or Chelsea; we’d never played Barca before and nobody expected us to win. I don’t see anyone saying that Barca side was their best but they were a very very good side and it was our first ever CL group stage match. I’ll not derail this thread anymore; it’s a memory now, I’m not sure why some see the need to try and devalue it.

It wasn't like beating Man United or Chelsea in terms of the experience of it but in terms of the quality of the side it was. Fair enough, remember it as a great memory, I would too, I just take exception when people like the mag who brought it up initially go on as if it was anything like beating a sensational side. Sensational sides don't lose 7-0 over two games to Dynamo Kiev or come bottom of Champions league groups. But still, as you say we've covered it all now!
