How long can Rafa last?

apart from tackin' the c*nts down, or should I say failing to stop Sunderland from relegating them, I don't think he's done too bad a job all things considered and threads like this are playing right into their hands as it's exactly what they want us to be doing regarding King Rafa's Geordie Nation.

You were lucky last season that you didn't have a team like this season's Wolves to compete with, otherwise things would have been a lot different imo

Objection. Conjecture. Hypothetical.

We had 45 teams to compete against broadly on a par with the 45 this year. We won the league. I remember Burton away as a particularly hard lesson about no easy games. We won.

Benitez still had a better squad before the money spent, do not twist that.

I am not actually saying he has done a bad job for Newcastle, but again, it is nowt special given players and resources at his disposal. So still do not see why he has such a bargaining tool.

Absolutely, they've got some cracking players in that team, but then we were solid defensively and took the same approach to games against the top Championship teams, as Mourinho does agains the top PL teams. Park the bus, aim to deny them points. Might have worked against Wolves as it did against Brighton. Dunno.

I maybe am a bit obsessed, but it is with Benitez being overly praised rather than caring about Newcastle. Read my posts above at how I have watched him closely since 2005 etc

Sterry? Mbemba Lascelles Dummett
Shelvey Colback
Ameobi Perez Aarons
Mitrovic​

Would you call that team better than most of the Championship? I wouldn't

He's clearly a very good manager, with the full support of the fanbase and a great deal of respect in the game too.

I would or at last with a moderate outlay on a right back. That's a cracking championship side IMO particularly with a good manager.

Benitez 2000,2001 with Valencia and 2005 and 2007 with Liverpool.

re the net spend argument, id say they lost sissoko, 'gini' and townsend of the main guys, but they were better off without the first two as they didn't pull their weight, just so happens they got insane money for them.
they got rid of stacks of others from an enormous squad but if I remember the majority were misfits and frozen out.

we lost pickford and defoe who were our only two passable players last season and spent 1.5m to bring in ten new players.

Benitez already had a team good enough to go up, and by getting gayle, Ritchie he bought two premier standard players as close as guaranteed to be good enough, plus yedlin for a bargain 4m- but most his others have been poor signings I reckon.

even this term, other than merino who looks a steal id argue he woud have been better to keep murphy/play mitrovic than sign josulu, use who he had instead of signing murphy and lejuineeeeee and manquillo.

then spend his funds on merino and a v high standard striker which I reckon would have been the better choice.

You got me but Héctor Cúper cites Valencias success was due to having the opportunity to play Tenerife twice a season and the players learning from that experience.

You can trace every bit of Spanish success since the 1964 European Championships to Benitez’ influence.

He is that good.

I think you're being generous. Colback has been atrocious for ages, Sammy Ameobi is currently plying his trade at Bolton and is a bit shit. Aarons is a permacrock. Perez was ineffective in the Championship and Mitrovic is decent but a madhead.
 
If the Spanish Armada was as well drilled as a Benitez defensive unit the entire course of history could have changed.

He is that good.
 
Tin Hat On - he has done a reasonably good job at steadying the ship (after a fair chunk of money it has to be said) especially as I still think he bollixed the relegation. They are reasonably organised and at times hard to beat. If anything however he is a tad defensive in the way they set up and appear to not always have a Plan B - for a world class manager this approach seems strange and I am convinced if it was anyone other than Rafa (their saviour) he would be getting more stick about the playing style
