I think you've misundestood the motivation of the homework. Shocker you've got it from the Daily Fail who hate anything Islamic anyway.
I'm sure many moons ago when we were at school - possibly in year 7 in RE or something we had to write a prayer or what would we pray for.

Now for me, being older and wiser, I'd be a bit irritated if my kid was asked to write a prayer if they hadn't decided whether or not they had any religious beliefs.

Yes, I agree teach children about other cultures and religion's part in them. But to ask the child to write a letter to their parents about converting to another religion? That is influencing the child rather than teaching them and that crosses a line of acceptability.

I wandered up Chester Road last Friday, and walking past the mosque and the Muslim-owned businesses did make me feel I was briefly in a different country. There's a bit of bridge to build if Islam is to integrate, more-so than other religious groups. But this letter about converting is ridiculous.

I think it's fair to have it in the curriculum so long as there's a syllabus on Humanism.
They need to be presented with all sides in order to make up their own minds.

Except the actual wording is "Write a letter ... about converting to Islam", so the kid could have written a letter explaining why they think it might be a bad idea to convert.

I did that for my mock A levels in reply to a question asking about the role/how important religion was in the world today: I ripped it to shreds and my 'rainbow family' right-on GS form tutor was well pissed off when he handed it back to me marked with an A.

Took this into the bairns school today and had a lengthy conversation with the head of year then the deputy head , called the local news paper who is interested but needs to contact the school and have a telephone interview with the mail online tomorrow, let's see what happens over the next few days . If anyone has any ideas how we can push this agenda more feel free to message me . Thanks

I've told been told to write a letter to my parents telling I’ve converted to Islam. This homework is due on 8.11.2017 at my school ( Houghton Kepier in Houghton-le-Spring)

Dear mam and dad
I’ve been told to write you a letter by my teacher saying I’ve converted to Islam. I’ve thought long and hard about this decision and I’m going to explain why I’ve chosen to convert.
1. For many years adult Islamic grooming gangs have been praying on vulnerable infidel children supplying them with alcohol and drugs and raping them and selling them as sex slaves , it’s happening all over the country with the most published one being Rotherham , the case in Rotherham was covered up for many years by social services and the police but eventually nice people in Manchester intervened and unearthed the truth , they even made a documentary about this case called 3 girls that was televised on mainstream media which should have raised awareness but in reality it hasn’t , it’s just getting worse , all you have to do is google grooming gangs in the UK . I don’t want to convert but it seems it’s the safest option as it’s only the infidels they pray on , you don’t seem to care enough to try and change this madness .
2. I’ll be able to marry an old man who will look after me because that’s what happens in Islamic countries, I know it’s against the law here at the moment but Islam has spread so fast through the Middle East countries and around the world and when you think about when and how Islam started, it really is terrifying. Read the Quran and the hadiths, it’s terrifying!!!!! The world leaders keep telling you it’s the religion of peace but Islam means submission, why would they need to keep telling you it’s a peaceful religion if it’s already peaceful? I know! It’s because of ISIS and the stuff they’re doing all over the world but I don’t blame them really because they’re just doing what the holy book tells them to do. Quran 5:33 “ The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and his messenger is execution by beheading or crussification or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides” Quran 8:12 “ I will instil terror into the hearts of the unbelievers , smite ye above their necks and smite all and smite all their fingertips off “. Quran 47:4 therefor when you meet the unbelievers strike off their heads “. There is so much cruel crazy stuff in that book I find it unreal that it’s even legal in civilised countries , I know there is a lot of nice stuff in the book but nice stuff doesn’t kill or rape people or give someone an excuse to chop off that fantastic guy lee Rigby’s head. I’m only 12 but when I look on the internet and see what’s going on in my country and around the world then listen to our world leaders saying Islam (submission) is a religion of peace and even my school is promoting it as peaceful so I know the world is in trouble, I’m converting before I get my head chopped off as well.
3. Islam already has its own set of rules here in the UK unofficially with that thing called sharia law, they’re already running sharia courts all over Britain but the government won’t do anything about it, our once lovely Lloyds bank even offer Islamic accounts were you don’t pay interest on overdrafts, the females can walk into petrol stations, banks etc. wearing the full face vail when you idiots can’t even have an open face motor bike helmet on. It’s crazy!! You as my parents have failed me because you haven’t cared enough to do anything when it’s obvious to see what’s coming. The mass genocide that’s happening right now in the middle east of all religions that’s not following sharia law is just terrifying, it’s so stealthy in the way it’s happening and to be honest it’s so confusing. I really don’t understand why the main stream media isn’t reporting what’s actually going on. I know we have bad people in all walks of life but when I see large groups doing exactly what a book tells them to do it frightens me , can you remember the ( I think it was around 1200) sexual assaults in one night on those lovely women of Germany by the migrants coming from those supposedly war torn countries . it’s crazy ! I’m out of religion and going to Islam because no one I personally know is willing to protect me and stop this madness.

Long story short man and dad, I’m terrified the way this world is going, the way I see it is I can either jump from this sinking ship or drown in what I think will be 20 or 30 years if I’m lucky.
