The role of a specialist keeper and Ben Foakes

Some random nonsensical thoughts. I can’t be arsed to structure this post

keepers have traditionally batted at 7 and expected to add a few runs
That has changed in recent years, where batting has taken priority
How many runs an innings is a good keeper worth vs an average keeper? (Noting both Aussies average about 20 with the bat)
Foakes averages 41 in FCC (from plenty of games) and is apparently a top class keeper. Batting average higher than Modern and Stokes. Is he the answer to balance the side?

Bat him where? 7, with Bairstow 5 and Ali 6? Could work......

However you slice it up, Stokes missing is killing us

Are we assuming that Bairstow isn't a top class keeper? At one time maybe but now .............

I've never seen foakes play but imo, it's very unlikely he will in the tests.

I think stokes will be replaced by woakes. Not in the batting order as he will come in 7 or 8

Foakesy the best gloveman I have seen for a longtime. Av 40+ div 1. Tell Bairstow 2 move up the order and give him the gloves. No brainer IMO

Don't agree on it being a 'no brainer' like. Bairstow has worked very hard on improving his glove work and drew a lot of praise in the summer from a variety of pundits on how much better he'd become.

I do really like the look of Foakes though and said before the squad announcement that I'd like to see him in the side. I don't rate Vince or Malan or Ballance whatsoever, for me neither of them have a right to be in Australia and therefore I'd be quite happy to see a side in which both Bairstow and Foakes are in the middle order.

2 keepers in a side 10+ year ago was almost unheard of bar the Alec Stewart situation.

Its commonplace now. I think at one point Surrey have had 4 in their top 7

Is this about the football team?

We have a ridiculous amount of keepers tbf.

Pope, Burns, Foakes, Sanga, and last year we had Wilson as a regular too.

So fuck if it’s the right decision for the team he should be suggesting it himself tbh

Nah he's been excellent behind the stumps recently. We can just play Foakes as a batsman lower down the order if we're desperate to play him. We did it with Buttler in India
