We've had some flops as strikers in my time such as Angell, Laslandes, Prica, Nunez, Stead but I will always have a soft spot for Billy Whitehurst. During desperate times at Roker Park, he always gave 110% and was a real handful for defenders, almost like a 'very' poor man's Frankie Worthington in some respects.
I enjoyed those desperate times with Marco, Gates and briefly Whitehurst. Can't for the life of me see the comparison with Worthington though.

He was hard as nails as well

He will be coming in to be an experienced striker, who Grayson knows and happens to be cheap. If he does start 20+ games then there is a good chance he has warranted those starts. I can't believe someone who scored 24 goals in a league below ours is being completely written off, he's not an inspiring signing but if we had stayed up and then signed Chris Wood, (a striker who scored 27 goals in a league below ours and had never been prolific before then) I doubt there would be as much complaining.

He had scored semi regularly and bagged 20 a few seasons earlier too. I get the point but both younger and has a better record.

We're more than £110m in debt. Part of that has to be serviced during the course of the season and IIRC a large amount of it (or even all of the £80m or so owed to the american loan company I forget the name of) before 2019 IIRC. The Pickford fee could well be allocated against that alone.

Our income has gone down more than the 40% wage reductions (58% according to Bain).

Parachute payments won't cover the short fall.

We'll have fuck all in the scheme of things to spend or allocate to wages till more high earners leave, because a few players will still be on upwards of 30k a week here and that simply isn't sustainable at this level.
Still don't buy it. Let's see how much we spend on players then. If we're totally skint then it's got to be sweet FA. I appreciate SG would not get any Pickford cash as that's a given. Yes we'll still be in debt and I didn't say we'd clear that debt - just that we have money to spend.

TBF the mags paid what £5m for Murphy ? so £900k for Vorn aint that bad

I don't buy this totally skint crap at all. Yes, we're in debt. £110 million but we've lost 2 big wage earners and those on loan (we'd have been paying at least part of their wages) and those on 1 year deals with more on the way out and those staying - Plodwell apart - on reduced money. We've got the parachute payment, Pickford sold and more to come from whoever decides to fuck off and can get some club remotely interested in signing them, We're not skint by any means though no doubt we'll have to be canny with whatever Shorty gives us to spend.
 woteva

Top SAFC accountant here, knows all the ins and outs, no doubt about it.

You dont buy it? It's there in front of you man. We have to re-invest a small amount to get a team out so we might spend somewhere approaching five to ten million as we have money floating around in and out, but we're banking on getting rid of more high earners and that will drag on till the end of the window so we're trying to get deals done like the loans and Vaughan. The reality is we'll still be losing money at the moment.

There is no comparison tbf but Whitehurst always boosted my spirits during bleak times with his heart and effort. Worthington although past his best was pure class. They both got my juices flowing albeit for different reasons.
