Can't believe I've got roped into this same dull crack again, same bad patter regularly for a year, the forensic examinations of Benitez's previous performances.
Some of you lot on here could go on Mastermind with the specialist subject of Benitez's career.
The fact you feel the need to pore over his career, his transfer history, his successes and failures just underlines the fact that he's obviously a good manager. The comfort blanket response that "benitez has failed everywhere, and he only won all those trophies because of x,y and z" is like some circle jerk safe space you all crawl into just to deny the truth.
It's encouraging.
As a great centre forward once said "opposition fans don't boo bad players", that quote is relevant in this case because i doubt there was the same forensic analysis of Pardew's previous performances, or McClaren for that matter, because the whole world knew that they were proper cack.

So basically, don't look at what he's done, just be happy he's a recognisable name? I'd be amazed if he takes you anywhere near the heights that Pardew did, but your lot need a big name for some reason.

The managers have a reputation for a reason. They've usually performed well enough to earn it.
So yes, we want a good manager, not some dweeb like Kinnear, Pardew or Carver, or McClaren, who've been mainly crap everywhere. Suppose you'd call it ambition, and waiting positive things and the best for the club.
Hughton wasn't a big name and he was loved by the fans, because he wasn't a patter merchant, he wasn't bluffing it, he had integrity and done well with the team. The others I've mentioned have been crap.
Allardyce and Souness had decent reputations and they were crap here so it's not all about the big name, but the man who carries the name

Just a quick question, why does Pardew's one good season wash out all of his previous and subsequent poor seasons, but Benitez's great seasons are washed out by the seasons that Sunderland fans have decided were poor?
We don't "need a big name", Hughton wasn't a big name. He was a coach given a chance and he did well with it, and he had the fans backing. It's preposterous to claim the fans need a big name.

Shocking to get rid of Hughton, he was doing well with you lot. You would have been in a much better position with him, imo. Went for the bigger names and got burnt every time. Liked him as a manager, always hope he does well seems a really decent bloke. Wouldn't mind him here.

Totally agree that we should have kept Hughton. Pardew was a poor appointment, an appointment nobody wanted and an appointment that, imo, started us down the path to our inevitable relegation.
Hughton's football is pragmatic and would have provided a very good foundation to build upon. The squad was committed, it was happy and it had a couple of exciting players coming through. Ashley wanted his man in the managerial hotseat and in the end that's cost him.

Just proven a point, Shearer doesn't get mentioned cause wor Alan! Yeah ya admit he was pony but you wouldn't list him due to your sense of loyalty to him from his time as a player and I get that.
It's the Benitez bit I don't get he did pony and none of your lot can admit it cause he is a big name. You failed to beat any of your relegation rivals and went from being outside the relegation zone on his arrival to being relegated, despite having a squad that sold two midfielders for about 60m afterwards.
It's whitewashed over that he took you down. It's like George Orwells 1984 with you lot re-write history!
