That is horrible - I had one that looked like that in the 1960s, when there were no official replica shirts, especially in Gateshead, and you just bought something with red & white stripes. I think most sports shops made their own, some had thick stripes, some had red collars and cuffs, others white (like mine), but it was still seen as a Sunderland shirt. My mate had a black & white one with similar thin stripes.

As for the slogan, I think "Our future is rooted because of our history" makes more sense, rooted being the Aussie vernacular for knackered, stuffed etc!

It makes sense at some point we'll have a similar strip to Sheff United as we both wear red and white stripes.
