Nah , I was a robinson and never crossed my mind - it was traditional for women to change name at marriage until fairly recently so seems reasonable that it's continued down the male lineage
 
I thought the use of "ton" in place names just meant "town" and so someone with "ton" in their surname just meant they came from a town called that.
What I thought.
Anderton. This is an English loctional name from either of two places so-called in Cheshire and Lancashire. The namederives from the Olde English pre 7th Century personal name "Eanrad" and "tun", meaning an enclosure or settlement, later a village or town.
