But, you were using goals as the barometer to judge a player.

I agree with the above, by the way. Beardsley was a tremendois footballer.

Cole was all about putting it in the net and little else. He improved his all round game once he left.
Beardsley was something else though. Absolutely magnificent on the ball, would run all day, massively unselfish. He's everything you could want from a footballer.

Aye the ugly bastard was a cracking little player like

As were Shearer and Henry though. Again, I agree about Beardsley, he's the best I've seen for you, unfortunately.

Shearer and Henry were predominantly centre-forwards and goalscorers.

Beardsley was a number 10 and Andy Cole was a centre forward. It's like using goals as a barometer when comparing Claude Makelele and Silvio Maric. Both centre midfielders.

Its not at all. Shearer was an out and out number 9, whereas Henry came in from the left much of the time. Juventus and Barcelona even played him wide left.

Not for Arsenal when Wenger, after his first season, turned him into a centre-forward where the records are being compared.

We aren't talking about just the first season though. Shearer was a back to the goal type centre forward whereas Henry looked to get the ball in much deeper areas. Both excellent at what they did, mind.

Keegan was a great fit for us and is a reminder of a time when players and managers really bought into a club and it's fanbase. No surprise that many of the players from his time cite Keegan as a huge factor in their decisions to join Newcastle. It's a shame that Ashley brought him back under false pretenses as it's irreparably soured their relationship and Keegan would be a great ambassador/spokesman for Newcastle United.

He will always be loved on Tyneside, regardless of his flaws.

Happy Birthday Kevin.

You can all take the Michael as much as you want, it was a glorious time to be a Newcastle fan. I have nothing but fond memories.

I'll wish him all the best anaarl.

You're right about those halcyon days, my mag mates had it large then and generally strutted around like so many dogs with multiple penises - and had my life to boot.

I'll never forget the look of terror on their faces as the reality dawned that Jellyspine really was going to blow an 'unassailable' lead.

It was clear early on that season that there were still issues (Collymore 4-3) then spunking a load of cash on a runaway garden rotavator from Colombia (Asprilla) but by the time the sorcerers apprentice (Cantona) broke the mags hearts and Special K made a pillock of himself I was in heaven - I had after all started attending church and praying for these very things to happen

The previous 4 years of torment were worth living after all

Have a happy birthday Special K
