Went to Trent uni, and always thought the Victoria centre was horrendous, it's no better than the bridges and looks awful.

Nothing beats the Victoria Centre residential development for utter f***ing ugliness. I think one of the main purposes of it was to justify the development of many other slightly less ugly buildings in the area. Nottingham council have wanted to turn it in to a sprawling metropolis for some time. What a bunch of arseholes.

Yes, forgot about Coventry it lost alot of it's centre.

For Sunderland you have:

Train Station
Town Hall
Victoria Hall
Buildings down the Riverside
Market Square area
Various old buildings around the city centre replaced by 60s/70s buildings

I went to Trent Uni too. I rarely went in the Victoria Centre. Despite Nottingham having a really vibrant centre in the 80s, the Victoria Centre even with middle class shops like Habitat and John Lewis, felt down market. The pubs in it which were brightly lit and devoid of atmosphere, the dreary bus station and the skyscraper flats above added to that feel.

Great photos. I went back to West Bridgford a couple of years ago and it's centre had got much better over the last 30 years.

Not been to the centre of Nottingham for about 20 years.

Aye there was that bombing during WWII which removed quite a bit of the centre but I think that the problem started years before that. The natural location of Sunderland city centre is to the east of Fawcett Street and down High Street East towards the docks. Before the middle the C19th that's where Sunderland was. It's clear that after 1850 there was an attempt to relocate the centre further to the west which was poorly planned. This led to the rapid decay of the east end as the centre and the bombing did the rest. To me the nearest thing that Sunderland has now to a definable city centre is the area around West Sunniside which was ignored for years. Town Planning has never been Sunderland's strongest point.
 
Im not sure if many board members know this, but the flats by the Colliery Tavern are known to the locals as "The skyscrapers".
I'm not joking either :lol:
