Why does BBC Alba......

This is my favourite thread, one, to not realise BBC Alba was BBC Scotland, two, to think there was a BBC Albania, this conjures up Paul Whitehouse as the presenter, at first I thought it was a critique of Scottish football but when the OP said BBC Albania ........

Norman wisdom was a national hero in albania iirc

all his films and forfar 4, east fife 5, were played on a loop

:lol::lol: I really f***ing wish that BBC Albania was a thing! Even better if all it did was randomly show Scottish football

I'd watch that, but there again a while ago when there was nowt on I watched a BBC Alba documentary on the now uninhabited island of St. Kilda and why the last of the islanders left in 1930 something.

It was a quite interesting programme but it did cross my mind that this is in Gaelic with English subtitles, how many other non-Gaelic speakers are watching this?

I quite liked the idea that it may just have been me.

Should really be asking why the BBC have a dedicated channel broadcast in a language that less than 60000 people speak

Possibly because it's within the BBC's remit as a public service broadcaster and they are not primarily driven by commercial concerns.

Their coverage is pretty good, to be fair. An hour's highlights of a game on Saturday and Sunday nights. Live Championship and Challenge Cup matches, as well as three Premiership games (usually Ross County games as they tend to have the highest concentration of Gaelic speakers in their support). And as a matter of policy they do not cover any of the Glasgow Bigot Brothers matches unless they were in the Challenge Cup and making an arse of themselves against Raith or Alloa.

Their shinty coverage could be better but I'm just pleased they have games on there at all. The Newtonmore v Kingussie derby is as intense as any. Those two villages hate each other. I prefer Glenurquhart though. Although for sheer laziness I just wander down to Bught Park for Inverness games. And the Cup Final.
