No mate - but that was the final nail in the coffin - if we'd slipped, you'd have lived to fight another day.
Going by recent derby form, you did slip. ;)

I think it's pretty obvious that had McClaren been replaced after the Chelsea mauling, (giving Benitez 18 days prep & an extra two games) we'd have survived. But he wasn't, so we didn't. Positive news coming out of the club about keeping Rafa, if he does stay that'll help convince a few players to stay as well.

I'm pretty confident we'll come up automatically, but I'll be watching Aston Villa with interest. They could be our biggest threat if they sort themselves out quickly; get the right manager, change their squad, start well.

That would have given him an away day at Stoke, which is never an easy place and they were on good form at the time. You lost 1-0 and I saw very little to suggest Rafa could have changed that. At home to Bournmouth you certainly could have done better than a 1-3 defeat. Swansea was a good result, Palace looked like they threw the game with that penalty, but you got beat by Norwich and Southampton, drawing with us. Nothing in those results say to me the points tally would have been different with two more games.

Regardless, it didn't happen anyway. It is like us saying "If Kirchhoff had been fitter when he first arrived we would not have dropped points after taking him off in some games, and would have finished 15th easilly."

still class all this "they celebrated stopping up, embarrassing" as if roles reversed as one of their cb's lash one in to make it 3-0 and survival confirmed, they'd all be to embarrassed to celebrate, and wouldnt even mention it at all after the game or season
They celebrated like mad when they stopped up last year.

How do you come up with that nonsense?

You'd be 2.6 points better off...so .6 ahead of us. Could have swung either way - but by no way as cut and dry as you suggest.

Benitez having extra time with the squad could have led to better results in the games that ultimately killed us (v Norwich and v Sunderland). It's not a given, but it's a possibility.

I'm not including the Aston Villa game as that was near the back-end of the season and he should have done better in that game.

The point being that had Benitez benefited from longer to work on the side, the more improved we would have been. Of course, it's hypothetical and fruitless, but I'd have thought it would be fairly obvious that we've improved under Benitez and more time (and 2 more games) would have seen that improvement produce results. Now, it could well have been that our improvement wasn't enough as it spurred other teams to raise their game, who can say?

Personally, I think Rafa would have improved the results in at least 3 or 4 games and I think that could have been enough.

How can you dismiss it as "nonsense" when you yourself admit it's .6 ahead of Sunderland, who were the form team at the bottom of the table?

You're also assuming that this form would have been our form, I'm saying that with 18 days & two more fixtures (fixtures against mid-table sides) our form would have been improved. 3 points from either of those two games and we could have survived.

And if my aunty had a cock she'd be my uncle. Didn't happen, you're relegated man

All ifs, and buts at the end of the day.

What obvious bollocks.
Rafa myth.
Cabaye had to miss a awful penalty to gain one of his wins.
You couldnt beat Sunderland Villa or Norwich under Rafa.
This Rafa keeping you lot up if he came earlier is the biggest load of shite.

If only we had got Sam in earlier, we would probably of been playing in Europe next season.

Thanks for that. I was just wondering how many games Sam had been in charge. I knew a mag fan would know.

Just typed "sam allardyce wiki" in the address bar and clicked on his wikipedia page, scrolled down to managerial statistics. Fairly straightforward.

He had 31 games and you finished 17th.

Yup. But reasonable, no?
Perhaps. I'm pretty certain that we would have raised our game to compensate if that did happen. He still had you playing like dogs shite at Villa, and that was weeks into his tenure.
If I remember correctly both Di Canio, and Dick had fewer games to save us.

Benitez failed to beat Sunderland, Villa and Norwich.

He's great. I hope he stays.

In 12 months you'll be whining he's too defensive. He sets up games not to lose. Two banks of four closely squeezed on the 16 yard line. It's been the criticism of him at Liverpool and everywhere he's been. Certainly if you can't beat the bottom teams in the Premier League then he ain't that great and it isn't going to work. Good luck with defensive football in the championship.

Oh and enjoy.
