It was obvious, against Villa and Palace, that the 'Rafa effect' was running out of steam with only a handful of decent attempts on goal.

If he'd been brought in earlier there's nothing to suggest that wouldn't have happened sooner.
Earlier in the season, you and others on here were working out Allardyces PPG ratio, but now all of a sudden it doesn't apply. Rightio

To be honest the mags have been really lucky that they were still within a shout of staying up so late in the season. If we had picked up more points that were deserved such as Newcastle away, Southampton away, WBA home they would have been gone weeks ago.

This relegation battle has flatted them a bit.

That's a very good point ........... in fact you've absolutely nailed it imo.

There was a theory on here that our draws would take us down and that Allardyce was failing ......... Benitez, it seems, was a success!

Some of these people would buy a turd if you wrapped it in black & white and called it the 'Geordie hand matchday warmer'.

Townsend said we have the points on board which is better than the game in hand . Mr motivator couldn't raise them against the worst side in the league since Derby . He is now being lauded as the 2nd coming of christ and begging letters praying for him to stay . They certainly do get mixed up in the emotion without thinking logically . Hope he stays .
The weird thing is, there doesn't seem to be a dissenting voice amongst them! I've read the Mags on here, the comments on the Chronicle and some of the Toontastic links posted up here and all, to a man, are towing the same line. It's weird, like some sort of mass delusion hysteria. Unless they're just scared to speak against the masses.

I've spoken to fans of other clubs, including a Palace fan that came up for their game against them and they all agreed with us so it's not just our bias getting in the way.

I've never done that on this forum or anywhere else.

And, as I've just said, people were also saying that being unbeaten wouldn't save us, draws would take us down ...... as you've discovered.

Allardyce went for it when the chips were down, Benitez bottle it at Villa and you've paid the price which is a big one.

He didn't 'bottle it', the players just weren't good enough

So the team that beat Swansea 3-0, and drew against Liverpool and Man City, aren't capable of beating a team that had conceded 3 goals a game average, in their previous 5, and had lost every game for around a dozen. Benitez played one up front and didn't really start attacking 'til Sunderland were winning.

Don't you think he failed in what he was brought in to do ....... he knew which players were there.

Of course they were capable, but when you miss good chances there's not much the manager can do. Did Allardyce bottle it at home to WBA?

Inheriting a squad of midfielders and fancy dans with little appetite for a scrap certainly didn't help.

He claimed they were good enough to stay up when he arrived and knew who he was inheriting.

There were loads of people claiming Newcastle had the quality to stay up but just needed organising

It takes time to find out which players he can maybe rely on.Allardyce dropped Defoe when he first came in, did he not?

Yes, imo.

Newcastle didn't have enough chances because of the tactics Benitez employed ........ 3 on target against a Villa side that had conceded 72 goals.

Do you think he failed in what he was brought in to do ....... he knew which players were there.

History being re-written as we speak.

Has he been a success? No. He has took them down.

I thought this new manager bounce was a recipe for success especially in the derby.

Not in my eyes, because I always thought it was too late and the players weren't good enough

Di Canio did a better job than Benitez but we weren't talking about statues and glory ........

They're really buying in to the "big name manager" bullshit, had they employed say, Nigel Pearson & had identical results they'd want him sacked by the weekend. Personally think they'd be far better off with the latter in the Championship.

The irony of it is, is as much as they hate Ashley, he tactfully continues to rope in their delusions about the club with things like this and prevents them from taking serious action against him.

Yes Ashley is poor when it comes to football knowledge, but when it comes to business and marketing he is a very shrewd man. There will be no "boycott" the club, because he knows how to manipulate the fans emotions with incredible skill. As much as he may take a financial hit from relegation, Ashley's ability to deliberately initiate both crisis, discontent and then play on their delusions with things like this, is what has allowed him to triple his wealth and make a monopoly out of sports direct.

They are muppets who give him free advertising and its hilarious how they fall for this shite time and time again.

As been said earlier if we had picked up the points we should have they would have been down weeks ago.

But let them think he is the new Messiah.

The same could be said of us though, and i imagine Norwich.

We conceded in last seconds at home to Everton having done enough to deserve a draw.
We conceded in last seconds against Norwich when the ref could quite easily have given 'hand ball' against Howson (i think) in the build up.
Lost to a really unlucky own goal against Arsenal, despite having 10 men.
Certainly should have beaten City.

Yes we had some luck at Bournemouth and were mildly fortunate at Spurs!!

These things do tend to even out though and over 38 games we have not been good enough. Simple as that.
