Yes and we would have been favourites to stay up. However it would have meant another performance like the last two, there were never any guarantees.
And no guarantees gor them either hence why his lack of a win on the 3 games cost them dearly . He underachieved in the winnable games and it's cost them . We even afforded last minute equalisers and stayed up . Beneathus is a charlatan

Benitez can do no wrong with the local press. By the end of the season he would have had 10 games to sort them out, that's just over one quarter of the season.
He promised the great escape and hasn't delivered yet he's still a hero. I just don't get it.

Correct . Blame the players Rafa it's easier .

To be honest I think if he came a lot earlier he would have made a difference. He is a proven manager no question about that. My main issue is with those that think hes done a good job - he clearly hasn't. He came in with 10 games to go or so and 5 of them were very winnable and in the crucial games against Norwich, Sunderland and Villa he was partly responsible. Good manager, would be great for you if he stayed but to say he has done a good job is plain wrong.
I said it when he came, we were fucked. Far too many players not pulling their weight with a defeatist attitude. I'll stick up for him cos I believe if he had 20 games, we would have gotten safe. The blame lies elsewhere for me

I don't think he 'promised' anything tbf.

It's a status thing. They're desperate to look fashionable and having someone who managed Real Madrid for half a season looks and sounds better than Chris Houghton, in their minds. I still say their hate of Ashley is because they see Sports Direct as a stigma. If he owned Pepsi or Apple he would be cut a lot more slack.

As Narraback just said, "They had Villa to play and we had Chelsea."

No idea about Tufty V King Rafa tbh.

I think you do and it's been omitted because it doesn't back up your point.

The same Chris Hughton who is massively respected by us?

I don't because I'm not a Mag or a geek .......... I'm sure you have all the facts about your club or could Google it in seconds.

...... is crystallising.

Bit by bit, thanks to the likes of Thewliss and the rest of the media, the myth is being carved in stone that 'if only Rafa had come in a month earlier' they would've avoided relegation and would now be starting the march to glory ...... well it's bollocks.

Under McClaren the cry was always 'loads of quality, just need a little organisation', I saw it posted on here dozens of times.

When Benitez was appointed he repeated that 'fact' and pointed out why they would stay up. "We need to give the players confidence. I know we have ability,” he says, "I’m here because I believe we’re good enough to stay in the Premier League.”

He was given huge wages and an open hand to do whatever it took to save the club from relegation.
He said he could do the job, with that squad, in the time he had.
Tufty was derided for insisting they were improving ......... Newcastle were rubbish against Villa but it isn't the fault of the latest Messiah, no sir.

In reality, whatever the claims that he's 'tightened up the defence' or 'instilled a new ethic' they're still shite.

The facts, rather than the fiction, are that since he arrived Newcastle have failed against Sunderland, Norwich & Villa. The new improved defence conceded 8 goals in the 3 away games before Villa and they only managed 3 on target shots at Villa Park ........ Villa had conceded an average of 3 goals in the 5 previous games.

In a game Newcastle simply had to win, Benitez got the tactics, selection and substitutions wrong.

So now Ashley has to take the blame, as usual, because King Rafa was 'brought in too late'.

I truly hope he stays, as everyone seems to be praying for, and makes a complete fuck up as he's done so far.

Spot on. You can also add the failure to play the best passer of the ball they have in Shelvey, presumably because of an issue going back to Liverpool.

"Benitez, who has a release clause in his three-year contract should the Toon fail to avoid the drop, even issued an astonishing plea to everyone at the club. He told staff: “If you have any ideas which would help us to stay up, then bang on my door.”

Obviously the 'non-bangers' are the real culprits

If I had a business that was failing, I would appoint someone with a reputation of building failing businesses back up. I don't see any evidence of Benitez ever doing that.
At the least, you're seemingly unaware of his records at Valencia and Liverpool. I didn't add in his stint at Chelsea, but it also fitted the bill in many ways.
