I smoke MUCH less weed than I used to. Red wine's been my new vice. For the last year or so I've been getting through between a bottle and a bottle and a half every night on week nights depending on how pissed off I've been when I've got home from work, and between 2 and 3 bottles a night on a weekend.

No, I'm a Website Content Manager / Brand Manager / Design Concept Creator / Marketing Manager / Social Media Manager / Intellectual Property Law advisor for a clothing printing company's 2 biggest selling websites, and sole Licensing Executive / Contract Law Executive in charge of finding clients, writing legal contracts, and examining and proposing alterations to legal contracts from other companies for our new merchandising sister-company, for which I just landed them a massive merchandising deal for a popular computer game after working on it with no help from anyone else for the last year.

£8 an hour I'm on, getting criticised for micro-nonsense regularly, and just got a verbal warning on Monday for a bit of ludicrously minor workplace banter with a close friend in another department.

I work 4 days a week, and it costs me £15 a day in taxis to get to and from work, so for the last 3 years I've been working my ass off for them and living in practical poverty while they're creaming in the cash from the work I do for them.

If I were to quit, they'd need to hire at least 3 people to replace me, and would probably have to pay each of them more than they pay me.

Basically, one of the two directors doesn't like the fact I don't kiss his ass like a mindless worshipper, and so I think he's got my direct supervisor out looking for any possible infraction they can whip me with to force me out of the company legally.

Fuck me Phil you've come up in the world since the malingering fanny whose hair was your very soul and being, scrounging benefits and dreaming of being a rock star, or at least getting your job back as the tea boy in a recording studio. I'm impressed, but I wonder how you landed such a multi faceted job (at sweat shop level wages) with such a spotty record of prior employment? Anyway, well done you.

As for your current predicament I reckon it simply boils down to how bad do you want it? Do you want it bad enough to put up with all their bollocks, or have you obtained enough occupational mobility to tell them to shove it and get a better gig with more money and less stress.

Shifting that amount of booze is mental like, you're on the slippery slope there.

Ever considered working for yourself? That's quite a skillset you have there, particularly to someone like me (small business running ecommerce site). I'm sure we could do some business fella.

I'd cut down on that anarl if I were you - it won't be helping

You could try walking or cycling to work, would save money plus the fresh air would do you good. From your job description it sounds like you are a jack of all trades master of fuck all. And stop taking drugs might reduce the paranoia that your boss is out to get you, you might just be shit at your job.

Nobody is indispensable

that should be the case with everyone, only I knew tooo much & bosses didn't have a clue about computers. audit went NUTS when they found out I knew all the major passwords. for each password i knew, it should have been allocated to individual people otherwise I could have committed fraud

Anyone needed time off work with stress that was caused by your job/workplace/bosses?

Did you manage to go back to the same job afterwards or did you have to find somewhere else to work because going back would have been too stressful?

As of Wednesday I've been off with stress, but my doctor suspects that an illness I had a few weeks back that I had thought was a virus may actually have been stress too.

So, I've been prescribed a course of diazepam over the phone by the Urgent Care Doctor at my local surgery, and have a proper doctor's appointment in a week to see how I'm going, but right now pretty much my every waking thought is stressing about going back to my job, facing the same old shit that sent me this way in the first place but with the extra added stress of worrying about talking to them about having had time off with stress.

I'd quite like to hear about other people's experiences of being in similar situations if you don't mind sharing.

P.S. Diazepam's quite good isn't it?

Careful with being labeled with stress.....from a reputational perspective that stuff can follow you around.

You sound a talented, undervalued fella.

I would get a different job if I were you. Where are you located (ish)?

Weren't you the man who drank stagnant pond water?

You need to basically knock the weed on the head, it'll only add to your anxiety and cut the drinking down to bare minimum. By the sounds of it you're depressed and need to speak to your doc about getting on some anti depressant meds but they won't work if you're drinking and smoking weed. I understand it's your way of coping with the stress but again in the long run won't do you any good. There's things you can change snd things you can't change. Focus on the things you've got control over and address them now before things get worse. I've gone through similar things myself and I'm also a senior mental health nurse so I can see things from both sides of what you're going through.

Quit, if what you're saying is true, you're worth your weight in gold and they'll either have to offer you a load more money, or hire an assistant to take the pressure off you.

Yeah, it has gone through my mind.

I could advertise my services on DigitalPoint, and I've been thinking about maybe setting up a RedBubble (site that lets you upload your own designs to sell on t-shirts) account and either selling my own designs on there or pairing up with someone who's more specialised in actual design and just doing the design concepts, content management and external marketing / social media for it myself, but the percentage you get from it is pretty crappy so it wouldn't be a proper income in itself until I could get to a stage where I was selling hundreds of t-shirts a day, which could take some time.

If you're serious about your business needing to hire external people with my skillset, drop me a PM and let's have a chat if you like. I'm interested to hear what sort of things I might be able to do freelance along these lines, and what the going rates are for it.

I'm in the West Midlands, not far from Birmingham.

Why trust one drug and not the other?

I convince myself it's not alcoholism, it's "wine enthusiasm".

I know a fella who runs a clothing/logo company who might be interested in your services on a freelance basis marra. Could you PM me some examples of your work and I will have a word with him

  1. Cut out the weed
  2. Wind back a bit on the booze - & ideally try to fit in a couple of booze-free nights every week
  3. Fit some regular exercise & fresh air into your life
  4. Look for a new job - might not happen immediately but even the process of actively working on it will give you more of a sense of control.

Well, this was one of my latest design concepts for the "geeky clothing" site/brand that I run for the company at the moment. The actual design work was done by the company's "proper" designer though. Basically for this site, I come up with all the design ideas and design ranges then hand them to the designers to actually create, then I advise and QA the designs, overlay the design on multiple garments/accessories in Photoshop and export them as website product images, upload the products, compose the product descriptions, SEO descriptions, SEO keywords and Amazon keywords, then advertise them on the site's social media channels and in marketing emailers.

It's only been up a few weeks and we've sold 5 or 6 already. :)

If you've got plenty of PQE then I'd just stick with the law stuff. Always decent money to be made in IP and contract.

Here's a legal counsel job at Jaguar Land Rover in the Midlands!

I have no formal qualifications in law unfortunately. All my experience has been on-the-job through necessity of there being nobody else in the company that could understand it and the company not wanting to pay external solicitors to do it. It seriously started as "Right, we've been in trouble a few times over copyright infringement, we should probably have someone that understands it - Phil, look into it... here's some money to buy some books on it", and before I knew it I was composing their licensing contracts to make officially licensed merchandise.
