Up until a few years ago Sunderland were the major shareholders of the airport. The mags have..
As said countless times on here..seems pretty pathetic - sat in Newcastle airport atm (I know look at me etc.) But looking around there is as much Sunderland AFC/SOL mentions as there is that lot.
Have they really got that little to shout about that they resort to something that isnt even theirs?![]()
Yes used regularly by geordies. Worked with them long enough to know.I thought that too, but I was taking the piss out of the mag at work (before you start aye I actually do work with a mag) about some shite, and he actually came out with 'at least we have an airport' and walked off.
As for being a pointless boast, from the above experience it's a boast that is kept under wraps until you have absolutely nothing left.
Not sure if this happened but even if it didn't just pissed myself laughing reading that!I remember a fat geordie confronting a lad in a Sunderland top at the airport. He was waiting for his luggage at the time and the greasy skunk told him to get the fuck out of the airport as Mackems shouldn't be allowed to use it. The lad was quite slight and actually looked a bit timid but out of no where he nutted this lad, knocking him out on the conveyor belt. Everyone just watched in awe as this fat twat was dragged along the conveyor belt with both legs hanging off it. By his second pass he still hadn't come around and no one had gone to seek help. I got my luggage after that so never found out what happened to him, he might still be on there now.

Semantics, cities grow. Woolsington is in Newcastle now, ergo Newcastle has an airport. Is Heathrow now Staines airport, not London? All very good if "Tyne & Wear" and "Newcastle" were the same thing, it's all perception I suppose, but expanding the boundaries of a local authority ever outwards is a council thing, it doesn't magically move places in and out of where they are. Woolsington was a place North of Newcastle, a committee bringing it in to encompass an airport is purely for their own political ends.
Equally Washington may be part of "City of Sunderland" for Council purposes, but neither it nor Penshaw are part of "Sunderland" the place and never can be. IMO.
Couldn't give a fuck
People in the east midlands also argue over the airport, well football fans, so it's not just us.
We don't bang on about having an airport all I ever see or hear about it is on here or from Sunderland fans. let's get one thing straight it is a North East airport used by all of the North East folk not just divided football fans it just so happens to be in Newcastle (yes wools ingrown has an NE postcode). No big deal at all
Are you implying all areas with a NE postcode are in Newcastle or have I read your post wrong?
Damn auto correct
No was just implying it is within the City of Newcastle boundaries rather than Northumberland as ponteland is. Many on here constantly refer to the bloody place as Ponteland Airport

Except that is staffed by brain dead pie chompers. Its a north east airport. Serves the north east. Thats all. Nothing very newcastle specific about it.
Sunderland had an airport.
Back during WW2 there was a need for air cover to protect the mining, shipbuilding and shipping industries in the northeast so they asked newcastle if they'd mind having an aerodrome. They of course said no cos it would be dangerous and they didnt want to get hurt.
Sunderland of course stood up and said yes bring em on so the primary aerodrome became Usworth, leading to us knacking the germans at the expense of our city being one of the seven must heavily bombed of the war and a lot of what you see now, the scars of battle as it were.
Anyway, we won and the war ended then one time they tried landing a few jets on the airfield. The were of course loud as fuck so we weren't having that nonsense going on day and night, so a plan was hatched to fly em over newcastle. They weren't keen but we explained the nasty germans had gone now and some careful persuasion led them not only to accept our unwanted air traffic but actually boast about it for the next 60 years. Not bad.
Can I just ask when do they go on about the airport? I see it mentioned on here all the time but I've never come across one mag who has ever brought it up. Don't see why they would to be honest as it's a pretty pointless boast really.
Funnily enough Sunderland Airport was located in Washinghton New Town (Usworth really) and not Sunderland. By the time the Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland was granted City status (and therefore included Washington) the airport was long gone.
Newcastle Airport meanwhile is in the City of Newcastle. The reason Sunderland Local Autority were given more shares is because their creative boundary for population resulted in them having a higher population than Newcastle and this entitled them to a larger share.
All of this is bollocks really; it's just a bloody airport.
Ooo look at me Im a frequent flyer.I fly a lot through work and nearly every time I land there I always hear some Mags whinging about our adverts "its Newcastle airport, this shouldnt be allowed"![]()
MchistoryErm I think your info is out of date mate, Copenhagen airport sold their stake in 2011 or 2012 to AMP Capital. The 51% local authority ownership still remains.

As I mentioned earlier Sunderland council has the majority ownership.
