Defoe

My daughter designed his kitchen for him at a cost of something like £100k if I remember rightly. He paid fuck all for it as his agent negotiated a deal whereby it was featured in a 2 page spread in a daily newspaper thus giving national coverage to the bespoke kitchen design company. Not sure whether the kitchen was £100k or about £70k.

I reckon he'll get 10 goals if he's a regular starter and plays at least 15 games. A hat trick against a shit team (quite do-able if he takes pennas anarl), a brace against the Mags and another team and then another 3 goals in 3 other games isn't that much to ask now is it?

Did you read your own post?

"A stick!" barks the dog.
"An excellent stick, it's the right kind of stick for my favourite trick.
I'll fetch it and drop it and fetch it and then,
I'll drop it and fetch it and drop it again."

"I'm not a stick, why can't you see?
I'm Jermain Defoe, I'm Jermain Defoe, I'm Jermain Defoe, that's me.
And I want to go home to my family tree."

If he manages 1 in 3 for the rest of the season, that might just make the difference between survival and relegation.

a 1 in 3 striker - huge improvement and 'good' as long as also assists and contributes other things '2 out of 3'.

That's what I'm on about as this 1 in 3 means little if the average time on the pitch is low.

If Defoe averages just 50 mins on the pitch for us would you still expect him to get 1 goal in 3 appearances? He only averaged 63 mins with Spurs which isn't low but certainly isn't high but here's hoping he gets into the high 70's for us as he will be the main man.

Look at Lampard's stats this season for example, 5 goals in 16 appearances which itself is canny as it's just under 1 in 3 (3.2 apps/goal to be exact). Seeing as he's only been on the pitch a total of 371 mins (average 23 mins per appearance) then he's getting a goal every 74 mins he's on the pitch.

Now compare that to Toure who has 7 goals in 18 appearances which is 2.57 appearances per goal and better than Lampard's 3.2. Therefore most will say Toure has the better goal stat but he hasn't by a long way! Toure has played a total of 1523 mins so averages 84 mins per appearance. He gets a goal every 217 minutes he's on the pitch compared to the 74 mins it takes Lampard to get a goal.

This is the 1st example I picked but I'm sure there are more. That's why appearances per goal isn't a good stat IMO, it's just easier to work out for most people as the info is easily found. As there are more detailed stats available then why not break it down a bit more and get a truer reflection of a player's goal return? ;-)

All his stats prove that he had a quite good goal record for quite good teams.

That's an improvement on what we have, providing he's not a busted flush.

However, he has never been an especially prolific goalscorer. I'm disappointed that a 32 on a megabucks 3.5 year contract is the best we can do, but I dunno why I expected any better from the people running our club.

If he manages 1 in 3 for the rest of the season, that might just make the difference between survival and relegation.
Agree with the sentiment apart from the last part. This squad should be more than capable of staying up with or without Defoe, he shouldnt be the difference in regards to relegation, but pushing us up towards 14th+

Jermain Defoe lives in the family tree,
With his Defoe lady love and his Defoe children three.
One day he wakes early and goes for a jog,
Jermain Defoe, oh Jermain Defoe, beware of the dog.

A striker shouts poyet
An excellent striker
The right kind of striker
for finishing higher

I'll play him and drop him
then play him again - and then
I'll drop him and play him
and drop him again

You're missing the context though. Defoe is one of the best goalscorers from the bench, meaning that his attributes suit stretched games against leggy opponents.

The only really relevant stat is goals per season, because your minutes on the pitch is dictated by your performances and injury record. Looking at 2009/10 to leaving Spurs (and discounting last season's half season), he averages 11.

That's OK, and is probably in a similar area to what Fletcher might get. He isn't a Darren Bent though, and predicting 10 goals in 15 games has no basis in statistics.

So we're paying him about a kitchen a week.
