Defoe

Not really any useful information here but I've always kept an eye out for Defoe as I used to share a house with his late father in Manor Park east London just as his career was taking off. The Sun actually ran a story with the picture of our house and 'England stars dad living in east end squalor' headline (wasn't even that bad!). Anyway, I think all I can really add is that I have always thought any big time Charlie type stories about him seem wide of the mark... humble background and seems very hardworking and family orientated (on his Mums side). Been wanting us to sign him ever since he went to Canada so can't believe it seems we are actually going to do it for once!!! Hoping he'll be a massive success even if just for the rest of this season. Football wise he always seems to keep himself in good nick and he's not one of those strikers who has run himself into the ground playing so many games like Michael Owen or even Rooney could be in danger of doing. For such a good player he's been on the bench quite a lot in his career which I hope means he has a few miles on the clock left yet....Haway Jermaine lad!!!!!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if we play like this, not just because poyet is bullish about his system [bar that farcical 5-2-3 or whatever it was for two games]

Our best spell in the premiership since quillips was with darren bent on his own up top, who in all the same ways as defoe can't play on his own up top.

if we have giaccherini behind him playing through balls for defoe to run onto then we can play to his strengths whilst still having the numbers in midfield to keep possesion and press hard [with a bit of effort]

we even have options with the likes of reveillere, bricutt, rodwell, wickham, fletcher on the bench
Just wondering, are people hoping tjat if we type Johnson giach alvarez enough times on here that gus will actually pick this side?

Dont understand why everyone is always so keen to play Alvarez, has done nothing so far for me to warrant putting in the starting line up (aside from rest of squad who have played being poor).

He better sign before he checks out the weather here... pointless straightening my hair today, getting blown all over the place.

Exactly, they won't - which means the likelihood of us splurging on someone young and top class in the future is diminished.

For the record, I haven't criticised the club for 'doing things on the cheap'. I was quite happy with how things were ticking over - didn't think we'd go down this season anyway and, whilst it's been painful at times, felt it was a necessary struggle in order to build in the future.

This, on the contrary, feels like a panic move. A loan or 1.5 year deal I could more easily understand; 3.5 years seems baffling when you consider he'll be nearing 36 by the end of the contract.

Also, he's being treated as some sort of messiah. I actually sense he could be good for us in the short-term - if we change our system accordingly - but he wasn't exactly prolific in his later days at Spurs and he's coming off the back of a year in a sub-standard league. He's also not getting any younger. I don't want to be a doom merchant but the way some are going on you'd think we'd bought a bloke at the peak of his career.

you're right we should just carry on loaning players and trying to play it safe

Just message a Safc supporting mate in Toronto

Altidore is on a plane to Toronto for a medical as we speak. Can you pick him up at the airport and make sure he doesn't miss it ! Oh and make sure that the medical doesn't involve kicking a ball
