Defoe

Exactly, they won't - which means the likelihood of us splurging on someone young and top class in the future is diminished.

For the record, I haven't criticised the club for 'doing things on the cheap'. I was quite happy with how things were ticking over - didn't think we'd go down this season anyway and, whilst it's been painful at times, felt it was a necessary struggle in order to build in the future.

This, on the contrary, feels like a panic move. A loan or 1.5 year deal I could more easily understand; 3.5 years seems baffling when you consider he'll be nearing 36 by the end of the contract.

Also, he's being treated as some sort of messiah. I actually sense he could be good for us in the short-term - if we change our system accordingly - but he wasn't exactly prolific in his later days at Spurs and he's coming off the back of a year in a sub-standard league. He's also not getting any younger. I don't want to be a doom merchant but the way some are going on you'd think we'd bought a bloke at the peak of his career.

People said the same about Brown and util recently everyone wanted him to get a new contract in the summer, some maybe still do, I imagine he will.

I think he'll be let go. He'll be on good money and he's on the wane.

would you take Lampard right now at age 36 until the end of the season?

Well aye, obviously, that's got nowt to do with what I'm saying though

I'd take Defoe right now until the end of the season, it's the length of contract that I find a bit illogical.

I think as fitness and diet improves modern players are extending their careers beyond previous generations

Good example.

Amazing how people are trying to write off Defoe. It was only a year ago he was a premier league footballer FFS.

I reckon it was probably the only way of getting him. Desperation? Probably, but we were heading for relegation, maybe he's goals will keep us up?

Were we? We've been poor in recent weeks but I always felt we have enough about us to stay up, especially with home games upcoming against sides that will have to come out and try and win games. Obviously the Hull game suggests I could be way off but to suggest we would definitely be going down without signing Defoe is odd.

But you've touched on what I feel about the whole thing - it seems like desperation.

IMO yes. It's been obvious for a long while and nowt to do with the Hull game.

And since leaving the Premier League he's averaged better than a goal every game and a half, albeit in a much poorer league.

I don't think it has. There's three worse teams. In a bunch of games we've actually created plenty and just not put them away, it's been more recent where we've looked impotent. In fact, that's probably why we're plumping for Defoe now - he's sick of his strikers not doing their job.
