As someone said age is just a number. Think of Sheringham, Strachan, Robson, Giggs who are all outfield players who lasted into their late thirties or even forties. We sold Kevin Phillips when he was around 30 and he went on to score 111 league goals. Age is just a number.
1) He can solve our goalscoring problems and keep us up.
2) He is worth the wages if he does this.
5) He will be a great mentor for Wickham. Bags of experience and that will rub off on the young lad.
6) He will inspire others around him to create more chances when they see his pace/movement.
8) He is a superstar and popular around the world, he could make a move to Sunderland more attractive for London-obsessed players. Many players would be attracted by the prospect of playing with him.
.
Of those 14 games in his last season 11 were as sub so probably not much playing time.

Buying better players works for me like.

At the end of last season, would you have been satisfied if someone told you that our plan to replace the loanees was to bring Defoe in during the January window?
I wouldn't, and that's the point I'm making. Defoe is better than Altidore, but Defoe as a long term option is a lot worse than a club like Sunderland should be looking for.
It's another panicked stop-gap. We should be doing better, and we appear to complete lack the capacity to do better.

On the contrary. We knew when we signed Altidore that Defoe would become available in January 2015 and that Toronto would be looking for a USA striker to replace him. It was a stunning bit of insight by Congerton and is now paying off in style, enabling us to use Altidore as a very strong bargaining chip. Obviously you didn't know this, but I think it shows you should be careful adopting a negative slant to all of our transfer dealings. I hope this helps. My point is that Defoe is not part of any masterplan. He's just a player who has been peddled to every club by his agent, and we're the only one willing to give him a 3.5 year deal.
That doesn't make him a bad player, but it does raise major questions about our recruitment policy or lack thereof.
