We all came together when Sir Bobby sadly passed away, why not for these 2 lads? Football comes second to human life, let's all be grown ups and show a bit of respect and remember them in a positive way!

Call me an idealist, but tragic events like this can have a positive effect.

On a global scale there is an opportunity for everyone to take a step back and gain some perspective.

Locally, if the heartfelt collective tributes for these lads help take some of the heat out of the derby's it may not be a bad thing either

Oh shit one of the dead on that flight was a mate from work when I was in Newcasltle John Alder. He was alovely bloke and newcastle daft, known affectionately as the undertaker because he had long hair and went to games in a white shirt and a black suit. Was single and the mags were his life, went to every game friendlies etc no matter where in the world. He was a gentleman who only loved his team and did not hate us more. Had some great chats with him, so sad, RIP John a true football man and a great bloke, I am gutted.

Times like this rivalry means nothing.
"It's only a game" all very poignant. Losing a loved one is very hard to accept and with the circumstances here probably makes it even more difficult....why ???
RIP to every one on that plane. Sends a chill down my spine when thinking what was going through their minds as they were boarding that plane.

I have to travel with my job and likely will have to do a few long haul flights this year. Makes me a little worried about flying.
Want to see my kids grow old.

My thoughts and prayers with all.

The tributes and donations are staggering and touching. You've done yourselves proud. Most of us have good mates who support the other team and when it comes down to it family and friends are what really matter.

The region has lost 2 real football fans, their passion was phenomenal. RIP to them and all those lost.

Respect and thank you.

I sincerely thank all Sunderland fans who have expressed their sympathies on this thread. We have a violent, toxic relationship, but it is high time we put the whole thing in persepective. We have no political, social, or religious differences, but we persist in saying one is better than the other.

Why?

Exactly, when we all know we are better.

Always been a silly argument for me.;)

If this tragedy leads to a better relationship between the two sets of supporters, it would be a fitting tribute to the lads who lost their lives.

However, when push comes to shove, we look after our own from the north east, me marra. We put the football aside as it is silly and help each other. We are from the north east and this is why we are fantastic

I think it's because we did have political and social differences in the past looking at the civil war and onwards.
I think the main problem is we all like a drink up here and on Derby day the pubs are full at 8 and atmosphere riles people up.
On Derby day I'm happy to cheer, jeer and go a bit mental but during the rest of the season I'm not too bothered.
Sadly, due to both areas having places around them that are a bit underprivileged we have a fair share of cavemen on either side. The lad who made the joke about there only being two on the flight a fine example for us and the lad offering to fight people on Twitter unless our fundraising link is shut down for you.

It's a shame that the more vulgar or offensive someone us the louder their voice.

I think this sums us up quite well. Passion, wind ups, and a nice little handshake at the bottom

A fine reply. I totally agree with you about the passion leading to a handshake. I thank God that is the case and I am really amazed a death has not resulted, given the passion of the rivalry.

We really must slow down.

Pretentious bastard.

Mate I'm originally from Easington

There's no denying there are places around both cities that are run down.
And in both cities. No need for you to make the non-point. Enjoy the truce, because in honesty that's all it is.
