I think he's very overrated to be honest. Since he started to get lots of recognition, the majority of the signings that would be perceived as at least being reasonably successful are:
Cabaye - a league and cup double winner with Lille
Cisse - Bundesliga top scorer
Tiote - league winner in Belgium and Holland
Santon - 40 games for Inter Milan, some of which came in the Champions League, along with 2 league winners medals
Ba - there for all to see in the Premier League with West Ham along with a little over 1 in 2 record in Germany
Sissoko - a French international who had interest across Europe for his performances in Ligue 1
I can't be arsed doing any more because it's easy to see where I'm going with this
Of the lesser know signings, there ones where it would be far more impressive if they ended up being successful, not many (if any) have been successful. Abeid, Haidara, etc.
They've signed a number of good players and of that there is no doubt, but I'm not sure how much scouting had to do with that. Their successful signings were all reasonably well known at the time and it wouldn't be beyond a football fan who watches a lot of leagues to have identified them as being good players, never mind a scout whose job it is to do so! I'm not sure why people seem to think he has done anything special.

Most of Carr's success is down to picking up 'known' players at end of contracts etc and as part of the 'business plan' being able to flog them a season or two later at inflated value. Concerning he has gone Dutch, the hit rate of Eredivisie players being a success in the PL is fairly low
The problem is he signs players the manager doesn't like/incapable of coaching and since that knacker isn't going anywhere we may as well sign players that Pardew can actually work with (Williamsons of this world). As depressing as that is mind....

Its a method that has brought you success overall, though. It's allowed you to add players to the squad who've at times pushed you on and at times saved you. Without the January spree the other year, Pardew would have taken you down - even if all the French lads you signed tailed off alarmingly. The thing I don't get, though, is the obsession with over long contracts. I see how it is supposed to work - you put a player on a long contract and it means you get a larger fee when you sell, plus looking better on the books due to longer amortisation. However, it seems to be pretty indiscriminate. Every one of them gets 6 years. All it's going to take is for a few of them to fail or, God forbid
, relegation and you've got a financial black hole that would be difficult to navigate your way out of.The Situation

But there's absolutely no secret to that or any great level of scouting needed. Any one of us as football fans could easily find out the names of players across Europe nearing the end of their contract and narrow them down based on perceived talent level. I just don't get why Carr gets so much praise for doing what you have said. As I alluded to earlier, I think anyone who watches a wide array of football across Europe could have picked most of those signings out as likely to be successful given their track record.
Overall it seems to work for you, Newcastle have made profits of £24m, £24.75m and £19.1m on transfers in 3 of the last 5 seasons while finishing 5th once, comfortably safe once and safe another time and as you mention that's the aim of the game, but I don't think Carr has had as much of an impact as some reckon.

If we lost Carr you'd simply end up with Pardew directly buying the players. Pardew's issue is that he doesn't seem to like working with flair players. He prefers the Sholas, the Williamsons, the Goslings, basically players like him. Average, did a job.
The risk with the policy is say we sell Debuchy for £11m. You need to replace a right back, all of these European clubs have cottoned onto the buy low sell high policy and established players (Richards for example) will want City style wages that we won't/shouldn't pay as we've done in the past.
The 6 year contracts, I can only assume as people have said it's a value thing incase they turn out to be world class and a City, PSG, Barca moneybags comes a knocking. You'd hope there's a relegation wage clause in there. Ryder says there isn't so it's nailed on there is

Hes ripped them a new one before, and feels confident he can have another good game, I'd much rather see the players going into the season with a positive mindset rather than coming out and saying we should be happy if we keep the score down.
Good on him I say, we will get beat like, but stranger things have happened.
