Just thinking about the threads on the test team, the likes of Ali, Stokes, Woakes etc. Jimmy apparently "nearing retirement" (355 wickets @ 30.36), Broad with a dodgy knee (245 @ 30.43) made me start thinking about our top wicket taker Sir IT Botham. His stats are amazing:

Tests: 102
Runs: 5200
Ave: 33.54
100s: 14

Wickets: 383
Ave: 28.40

Will there ever be another Botham? Flintoff showed promise but really only performed for 4-5 years. What we would give for a Botham now eh?

Surely there is the hope Stokes can step up to the mantle.

I doubt he will but you have to hope. He's the same sort of character that botham and flintoff were as cricketers.

His bowling stats are clouded by his later career. He was a world class bowler (best in the world) who could act as a frontline batsman. Flintoff was close but he wasn't quite as good at either as Botham at his peak. Flintoff knew when to call it a day Botham didn't.

Probably not

Jimmy and Broad's averages are still good mind, to take that many wickets, all around the world at around 30 is still good going.

Stokes has a chance like, not to match Botham's figures of course, but to even get remotely close. The lad is made for test cricket, he may not be that consistent, but he has the ability to win an innings with bat or with ball, the selectors have got to be patient with him.

True. I remember seeing him waddle out to bat against WI in '91 and wondering why.....

his bowling stats are good batting average if that
A bit like Flintoff, the stats don't tell the whole story. Botham had the ability to make things happen, never gave up and ALWAYS believed in a) his ability and b) the possibility of a win (there are few cricketers like that - Warne being one of them. Trent Bridge 2005 was one of the finest examples of this in the 4th innings)

Until he played for durham

Well yes but he was finished by then and has admitted since it was a huge mistake. I was thinking test cricket really.

I remember bumping into him on the train when I worked for East Coast a couple of years back and did the "fan" thing of telling him I used to watch him at Durham. The lying get told me it was "a special time. The birth of a county" - it wasn't 'til I read his 2nd book last year that I realised......

Fat twat!

Is this bit serious? I'd be interested to see how many Test match all-rounders with over 100 wickets and 1000 runs have better stats than Botham.
hid batting only averaged 33 didn't it

it was a different game back then to now. he was far from 'average' with a bat in hand. when he remembered to take one out with him ;)
I know im young and naïve but I don't get it.

yes only 33 whether you a batter or allrounder is average
Pretty decent for an all rounder against the bowlers he faced tbh. They were far better than today's mob

Although to clarify, he was a superb hitter, rather than batsman
