The beard to be feared.

Are people going overboard with the praise that Moeen Ali is receiving for his ton yesterday? Sure he batted with calmness and assurance that belied his inexperience. But could he have marshaled the tail better and tried to shepherd the strike in the last over from Jimmy?

Excellent start for his England career no doubt, coupled with his bowling he has a couple of strings to his bow. But lets (English media) not get carried away.

did think he made a mess of getting a single off the last ball of the penultimate over, but that is off channel 5 highlights so obviously they didnt even show a replay of one of the most important balls of the day. might have been good bowling. whatever the case it was a very good innings.

He scored a 100 when all around him were falling. Took a couple of good wickets. What does a bloke have to do to get praise on this board?

exactly as above his one mistake was not taking responsibility to see out the last over, probably believed it would be herath and trusted Jimmy but still he should have seen it through.

Batted all day on a 5th day pitch with the tail in only his second test, didnt offer a single chance, deserves all the praise he's getting and next time take strike for the last over!!

Exactly!!

Watching you could see he as trying to tell the lower order what to do, he made an error with not taking a single near the end but christ it's his second test match ffs....
Was there an opportunity to take a single in the penultimate over? Certainly not off the last 2 balls

Excellent innings from the lad. However I still thinks its fair to point that later in the day the Sri Lankans weren't even trying to get him out. And as others have said, he did fuck up regarding the single and keeping the strike.

Fair play lads. Trust the wise smb to put me straight.

I really like this lads temperament, the celebration for his 50 and ton as well. He wouldn't have been blamed if he went ape shit as they were his maiden milestones but he kept his cool as he still had a job to do. Went up in my estimations after that.

Plus his beard is phenomenal.

If he fails against India people will want him out again.

If he does become a mainstay I reckon it'll be as a batsmen (who can turn his arm when needed) rather than as our front line spinner.

Edit: actually there will be plenty not wanting him cos he isn't English enough (rolling eye gadgie)

Eh? 'Cos of his muzzy beard? Ignorant so and so's. He's more English than half the team so it's a non starter for me like.

Apparently there was one idiot in the crowd who shouted he was more suited to blowing buildings up than playing for England, he was rightly shouted down and reported.

He is definitely a batter who can bowl a bit. People shouldn't expect the world with his off spin, potentially really good offy but his batting is pretty much there.

He has earned a few series in a row for me like.

Fantastic effort, and I don't even know if this is criticism, just a fact, in the last 30 mins he didn't do particularly well in getting the single, sometimes he tried to, sometimes he just played out a maiden and let Jimmy take it.

Personally, I'm not convinced he was wrong in letting Jimmy have the strike in the last over. He'd been at the crease a long time and his concentration levels would be sorely tested. Jimmy had already successfully defended 50 odd balls without I understand, being in any trouble or taking any risks. Therefore why not let the senior player, whilst also a number eleven batsman carry on doing the good work?

As for his future - a superb debut couple of tests which hopefully he can only build on. I'm for him being in the next series and hopefully a few more aside.
