I here what you are saying mate, I just don't agree with the sentiment, I think it would have a negative impact on the team. I don;t think you should expose your best player to the new ball, it really isn't about guts, the captain and coach decide the lineup, they would just say to him, you are batting 3.

Bell will score more runs at 4, so why waste him at 3? He is a lot more likely to nick off when the bill is moving about and is harder. We have options there, we can either put experience like car berry or compton in, or give a youngster like Balance a long run.

Look how well Bell did last year, he was the main difference between the sides in the home ashes summer, he would be a complete waste at 3 IMO.
In an ideal world we would have 2 Bells - one at 3 and one at 4. Accept what you are saying everything in the media suggests he has made it clear he wants to bat at 4

They got easily stick Root or Bell there, and maybe morally they should step up but they will score more runs at 4 and 5, what it comes down to for me anyway.

This argument is an absolute load of shite, it is nothing to do with guts, he is our best batsmen, why on earth would want to put him at number 3 and expose him to the new ball? Were you calling KP gutless when he didn't step up, Michael Clarke? Ian Bell has to bat at 4

Because Root is not a test match number 3, he has clear technical faults like, it isn't rocket science

Aye he isn't against the new ball, he has been poor on the front foot, this isn;t just me who thinks that, it has been explained by the likes of Michael Vaughan, who is his mentor

Nah no chance is he an opener like, apart from that 100 he barely made a score, too many technical faults to be exposed to the new ball
He isn't an opener yet got picked for England on the back of his OPENING exploits for Yorkshire?
Trust me hel be back up there in the next 18 months or so.The lad has been shoved all over the order since he got in side and that's not ideal for anybody.
As for technique his issue seems to be fact he hangs on back foot a lot.Particularly early in innings. On plus side he leaves well and plays the ball very late which are essential in an openers armoury. Also his temperament and attitude seem spot on.
Time will tell on where he settles in order.

Pleased for Root but long term he should open IMO. To be frank we are accommodating far too many overseas batmen ala Robson.

I'd rather see Root open and Ravi given another chance in the middle order as he's in good form.

Totally agree with the Root call but the Bopara part has cost you a like!

Bell has stated before that he is more than willing to bat at number 3 but it's up to others to judge on whether he could or should do so. People seem to forget that Bell's average is 7 runs lower than normal when at first drop despite hitting 235, 159 and 116 from there. For me, you let a player like Bell with 20 test centuries, bat where he feels most comfortable and where he can influence the game best. If that's at 4 then so be it.

Big different between county and international level, won't be back up for a while, too many technical faults, he is a nailed on middle order player, all the qualities for it

It's a shame Trott isn't going to be around any time soon so this argument could be put to bed about Root and Bell's position. If Ali moved up to 3 then we could bring in an Englishman like Taylor or Vince at 6.
