Should it be phased out??

Following on from the discussion on The Cricket Writers this morning and also BBC last week - is this format now becoming outdated?

Just thought I'd ask the question of you chaps.

Been saying it for years. T20 for those who like rounders and tests for proper cricket fans (I don't mind the odd t20 if i fancy a bit whack about but ODIs can go for me)

Reduce it to 40 overs. Each team gets 2:35hrs to bat with innings separated by at 25 minute interval. Day time games: 12:45-6:20. Day/Nights: 4:15-9:50. Rules for fielding: Maximum of 5 players and a minimum of 3 players outside the circle for the entire duration of the innings. Basically a one day game with the fat cut off which is much more of a competition between Bat, Ball and field.

Still feel as though one day cricket has a lot to offer though. Aswell people in countries like this one mainly would rather pay £50 for a whole day of Cricket than £40 for a 3-hour slog.

never been a fan of 50 overs personaly, the way england play it. 30 overs of test match batting, the a t20 at the end. medieval.

i know t20 has its critics but it is what families and people who dont have the time, to sit all day want, with a result, weather permitting..

test matches apart from england and australia are usually played in front of pitiful crowds, even india post tendulkar will suffer.

i wonder if this next 50 over world cup, will be its last?

50 over cricket is a cup competition for cricket fans, whereas T20 is a comp for the easily pleased. Smaller average crounds since the beginning of T20 in this country could be a sign that the novelty is starting to wear off, especially amongst part time cricket watchers.
I'm looking forward to the 50 over comp this season as I think it'll produce a better standard of cup cricket than we've seen for a while.

i hear and agree harry but 50 overs is a long time to wait for the result and i feel there will be smaller crowds attending. look at some of the t20 crowds and yes its far from perfect but that is what people want.

this is from me, who barely lifts a finger when the tests start

This! But why has it bee crammed into a 3 week period? That's what we do for t20 not the cup.

A 100 over game is a full day, a lot of people can only get to one day of a four day game, and it's usually the first day so they don't see a result. This format will suit them as it's a full game in one day. Of course it won't suit many of the T20 lovers, but it's not supposed to, it's purpose is to provide a cup comp that still relies on the traditional style of cricket the game is founded on.

understand that but 50 over games start at 130 till approx 2200. to long for families, inconvenient for workers, even die hards like me, cant turn up.

For me that's a mistake, I can't understand why they've done that, but then again the whole fixture list has been less than helpful to Durham so far.

Most games start at 10.30.
