Floodlights

What's the current situation with regards to getting floodlights at the Riverside? Harker keeps flip flopping on the issue when asked about it. Is it not, rather maddeningly, not a priority? Are we still too skint to afford them? Would we even get planning permission? I was under the impression local residents were far from happy with the idea.

Correct. End of story really. Harker should have had the bull by the horns ages ago but the bloke seems to be a complete failure with just about everything he touches - yet he continues to hold a leading position at the cricket club. Bizarre but then again given what passes for competence nowadays we shouldnt be surprised.

So how did we get away with it in years gone by when Sky were in town and they brought the floodlights in for Pro 40 games?

I'm sure if they really fought for it they could get it through. They were of course part of that big expansion plan a few years back.
I'm sure they could. The planners if they wanted to could do what say the government or the EU does - ignores what people want and plough on regardless.

Shame we're never going to see Night cricket again. Always used to be the highlight of the season and got a big crowd through the gate!

All our plans seem to have gone belly up. No floodlights, no Gateway, no hotel. There was talk of a second electronic scoreboard where the old style one is now. I presume that's a no go as well.

No money, no money, no money and no money.

Wasn't Hilton mentioned about 2/3 yr ago?
Yep.

However, don't Lumley Castle have a "gentlemans agreement" that touring sides will be offered first refusal. Can't imagine them giving that up if the Hilton rocked up.

But didn't the Aussies stay in Newcastle during the last Ashes? Heard the Malmaison hotel?

The money was coming from grants. The hotel I believe was being outsourced to an actual hotel company.

The club has to match the grants for ground improvements on a 50/50 basis if I remember the figures correctly, the hotel was to be partly funded by the club so that they could receive income from it. The big hotel chains didn't want it, so it was opened up to individual investors and there wasn't enough interest to get it off the ground. I think at the time the rooms were being offered at 60 thousand pound each to investors.

Where did we get the money for that airshow the other night.

Doubt that was cheap or do you get a pot of money from ECB for pronoting 20/20
