Tin hat on here, but I don't understand why he is an automatic pick it seems.

Averages 36.7 after 15 tests and has never really looked comfortable. The Ashes at home he was a walking wicket, and was carried by his score at Lords (where he was dropped on 8). To me, he looks technically decent, but doesn't have a plan and as such gets bogged down. It's all very well batting for an hour and a half, but if you only contribute a 15-20, it doesn't matter how good you look

One dayers averages similar, which is better. And he seems to play some shots. But he will never clear the ropes (strike rate of 80 is only ok)

Bowls some tidy off spin, but it's no more than that.

Needs big runs in county cricket for me. And I mean BIG runs

root is in need of some time out of the england squad. he has been found out and i have never seen a top order batsman, playing so far back in the crease and getting bowled. his foot movement is very slow, for a top player.

he wont be dropped as he is being groomed as a captain, after cook. unfortunately with moores the lad will not progress

Cupboard is bare mate ,probably been picked on potential and sticking with him long term for that very reason

Agree did get bogged down in the Ashes down there, mind the Aussies did bowl fantastic against him

The one who I feel sorry for is James Taylor in comparison to Root.Taylor has been harshly treat when you look at the extensive run Root has had flattering to deceive.Taylors debut and baptism came in that troubled So,Africa home series in 2012 re-Strauss/Pietersen so the atmosphere was far from ideal for a young player like Taylor s first taste of Test cricket. He is about the same age as Root with similar talent yet seems to have been put on the sidelines yet the selectors have persevered with Root.Taylor has definitely not been given a fair crack of the whip whereas Root has yet we are still waiting for him to deliver.

good point this. root is living off the 180 but he surely has to contribute more now. he will be in for sri lanka tests but 4 failures and he has to be rested

Looking at it long term, I'm glad we haven't just dropped him and left him to rot. He's still only 23 and if some reports are to be believed, was one of the young'uns pushed out of the "clique" in Australia by the elder statesmen in the squad.

An average of nearly 40 is very good for a young player. He is going to have spells where he looks a little bit lost as he continues to hone his game. Technically, he is very good although I agree he does seem to bat deep in his crease and is a tad slow with his footwork but that generally improves with experience.

fair comments but we have to see him performing better as it looks like word has got round on how to bowl to him and he has to show he can get out of this habit of nearly standing on his stumps, to good and full length balls.. i rate the lad but as previously mentioned taylor was not given the opportunities root has had.

personally i would leave him out of odis and t20s and allow him to improve his technique and foot movement for tests. i predict he will captain england though

Trust me the lad is going to be a top player. What hasn't helped is the constant shuffling round the order he's had to do.To me last years ashes was a year too soon but once made the decision to open with him they should have stuck with that down under too.
Hel do ok this summer don't worry.

Justice for James Taylor!

Cook
Root
Bell
Ballance
Morgan
Taylor
Bairstow
Ali
Broad
Anderson
Onions

How's that for ya
an interesting team, root and ali as spin options? batting down to 8 as well. for some reason, i dont think bairstow will be seen this summer, so prior or buttler

I concur.

No stand out spinners so lengthen batting order and like you say use root and Ali as the spin options.
Prior been injured and still not sure butler is a test match player so went Bairstow although I'm not sure how he's done so far this season to be fair.

not sure either but i think the pundits on sky mentioned the lad at essex for wicketkeeper, foster if prior was ruled out. not up on my keepers at the moment but there must be others out there as well

Butler probably not ready yet but definitely think he is the best long term option, just a hunch but he seems to have the right mentality for international cricket.

James Foster? I'd be amazed if went back down that route. He played few tests early 2000s I think. In his 30s now and for all excellent with gloves his batting never been great.
Think it will be either Bairstow or Butler if Prior still lame.

the lad has massive ability but his keeping lately has let a few through and missed stumpings. remind me of prior when he first came on the scene. can remember bob willis, of all people, calling for him to play tests, after one of his innings in t20 a season or so back

i agree. i think they were just throwing out names. looks like keiswetter and steven davies are no longer mentioned either

Like I say sometimes a player comes along who's average is nothing to get excited about, but who just looks the part and who has the right mentality to step up,just my opinion but think Butler is in that category.

Davies has given the gloves up apparently so he's out the reckoning and kieswetter another one who's 4 day credentials just don't stack up to warrant a test call.

this summer, if prior is out, then buttler should start in the sri lanka series, then its down to him, to retain his place. ironic how he left somerset to play wickie for lancs and the odds are lancs wont see him

indeed. who is wickie at hampshire, surrey and middlsex these days?
