Tin hat on here, but I don't understand why he is an automatic pick it seems.
Averages 36.7 after 15 tests and has never really looked comfortable. The Ashes at home he was a walking wicket, and was carried by his score at Lords (where he was dropped on 8). To me, he looks technically decent, but doesn't have a plan and as such gets bogged down. It's all very well batting for an hour and a half, but if you only contribute a 15-20, it doesn't matter how good you look
One dayers averages similar, which is better. And he seems to play some shots. But he will never clear the ropes (strike rate of 80 is only ok)
Bowls some tidy off spin, but it's no more than that.
Needs big runs in county cricket for me. And I mean BIG runs
