How can the committee of the club possibly say that the youth set up has nothing to do with them? Surely a successful and thriving youth set up is in the clubs interests and if things are as bad as I hear they are the club could be boxing themselves into a corner.

Worrying for them, especially given that the expansion of the league means promotion/relegation will happen much more freely, they could find themselves slipping out of the top flight.

Sunderland are shooting themselves in the foot a bit here. From what I have seen D.S did a lot of work behind the scenes so that will also be lost.
Very committed cricketer and should piss on the league below. Obviously with him not having any other distractions now, apart from getting runs and catching catches in the slips (lazy kernt), Washy should storm that league.

I think they told the parents to butt out ie it had nothing to do with the parents, which is a recipe for disaster as they'll all fuckoff. I dont think cricket clubs realise that whist the majority of junior cricket is about the bairns it is also about making sure that it is family orientated and the bairns family are happy at the respective cricket club. If the parents dont like the place then youre in trouble.

Mrreal summed it up in his post, We have brought in a number of players but these lads are of a good age who are buying into the plan we have in place to get all 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI teams into the Premier League within 3 seasons. Our 3XI went up last year so we are on course to achieve our targets, Just need to make sure one or ideally both of our 1st and 2nd XI go up this year.

Cole Pearce is a cracking young lad who's superb behind the stumps and also now coaches all of our young wicket keepers, He was let go by the academy due to injuries.
Adam Randall came from Newton Aycliffe, Young left armer who has been injured for a long time but is gradually getting back to his best, 21 years old and opens the bowling for the first team.
Melvyn Betts is the clubs professional who brings bags of experience having played cricket for Durham, Middlesex and Warwickshire.
Shurbs as mentioned has came from Sunderland and will be straight into the first team to open the batting, I'd imagine..

Thats the list of signings we've made this year, We've also got a new left arm bowler in the second team who has shown glimpses of brilliance.

From the 1st XI that played on Saturday the 2 openers were under 18, One has came all the way through from the under 11's and the other was signed last year after not being given a chance at Philli. Andy Ebdale, Mark Watson and Joe Thompson are also all products from Washington. The rest are made up of lads who have joined the club over the last few years (unpaid) and then the captain, Ash Thorpe.

The signings obviously have a big impact on the 2XI which makes the team stronger, We now have the old first XI captain in the second team along with Daz Hickey and a number of young lads coming through. From the side that played on Saturday, 9 players have played at Washington their whole life with 7 under the age of 23. Matty Brown, a young wicketkeeper made his debut for the seconds at 12 years old too.

Things are looking promising and by no means anywhere near the expenditure some people assume Washington are spending to accumulate this squad of players.

Too many sports at Ashbrooke and a fair bit of resentment between them. Questions about who generates the cash and how much, relatively, each sport costs to run (presumably cricket pitch prep expensive). Also, do fees go directly to the sports in question? Or via Asbrooke Sports Club? Are all first team cricketers paid?
The set up over there, I understand, is rather complex and political.
Pretty much an unavoidable situation in a multi-sport club. The cricket section at Sunderland will always be at a disadvantage to most cricket clubs as any money that goes to the bar or through hosting events goes to the club. Membership fees generally go to sections, but also cost more than your average club as membership allows you to play any of the sports, so may well be a deterrent to parents when they can pay less for their kid to play cricket somewhere else locally.

On paid players, Sunderland now have 1, along with a Durham player when available. It's pretty obvious to anyone with some knowledge of local cricket that we have cutback over the last 2 years.

Not sure where this has come from, but it's bullshit. Sunderland are struggling with the junior section, but it's all to do with numbers.

Good post this. Seems like they have a good balance at Washy. Definitely think they should be winning the league with that side. Not sure anyone else in that league will get near them

I know Matt and his dad. The lad is 13 going on 14 and is a tall strong lad who is at the county. I find it incredible that Matty Potts was not given a chance at Philadelphia. What were they thinking of, although at the time there seemed to be a bit of turmoil at Philli. Just shows you and going back to my earlier point that if you dont give these lads a fair chance at a more challenging level they will invariably leave and find a club that will.

What with Sacriston joining the NEPL at both senior and junior levels and Washington it could be CLS CC sandwiched in between who begins to feel the squeeze which would be a remarkable situation!

Thought he was 12, I told the umpire on Saturday he was anyway. Either way, he was very promising..

He's 13 now. Doesnt really matter like. Yes hes a good player, very tall and strong. Its good too see him getting games at that level which will only benefit him. I know of quite a few of the younger Washington lads and their parents as they are at the county with my son. What always staggers me is the height differential between lads of the same age or a year either side. Some huge kids! I guess in time that it all by and large evens out.

BTW I also see that Kimblesworth Under 13s, in the final analysis, didnt fold? anyone know the craic?
