Too many sports at Ashbrooke and a fair bit of resentment between them. Questions about who generates the cash and how much, relatively, each sport costs to run (presumably cricket pitch prep expensive). Also, do fees go directly to the sports in question? Or via Asbrooke Sports Club? Are all first team cricketers paid?
The set up over there, I understand, is rather complex and political.

I also get the impression that a few individuals over the years have financially "propped up" the cricket element. Maybe that has stopped. If any of these rumours/snippets is true, they are bound to have problems.

Wow! Serious wage bill at Washy this year. I think they need to be careful though as when the paid ranks outnumber the unpaid players in the side it can be a slippery slope. Hopefully they have a long term plan in place that enables their own kids to be promoted to the first team.

Surely hot favourites for the title now though. Can't see anyone beating them.

Great point about the paid vs unpaid balance.

Still more unpaid than paid players in the team, even with this signing.

I'm sure a big part of their pitch to get into the NEPL2 was centred around their catchment area and youth set up as well. There is obviously a plan there but it appears to be an expensive one. Any club with a bit money can do it; the trick is sustaining it when and if the money runs out.

Must be getting close though if thats the case. Not having a go though. Most sides in the top leagues are paying a few, and at least Washington are paying quality. I don't know the ins and outs of the club and where the money comes from, I just hope they continue to promote their own into the 1st team so if the money does dry up, they don't spiral down the leagues losing the lads who are the heart and soul

7/4, with the 7 all being under 23yrs old

This aint a criticism of Washy as they seem to have come in for the usual bitchiness on here which seems to have now transferred to others. They are success story and something which clubs across the region appear to be trying to emulate/imitate with varying degrees of success.

But

I would say that if I had a promising young cricketer there, mebees 14 or 15 yr old, I would be starting to get concerned about his ability to break into 1st team there.
Washington appear to have an outstanding youth set up but surely this is only successful if lads progress to 1st team, otherwise what is the point?

I know that there are a few from WCC that get on here but interested in how your juniors fit into the bigger picture. As I say, an observation, not a snipe

Like the 15 year old that is opening the batting for the 1sts this season!

Fair play, I am not criticising. My point still stands that it must be a sizeable wage bill as those 4 will surely be on good money!

Sounds like the kids are still getting a go though which is great, and to be fair, to make it to the top league (and stay there) you do have to invest.

There is a long term plan at Washy. We're in the process of many didn't things to get the club ready to play in the Premier League sometime soon hopefully. We have raised the funds to put new drainage in & have plans for a new clubhouse. Our main issue though is Sunderland Council dragging their heels in letting us take over the ground. Hopefully this will be all resolved soon so we can get started.

In regards to the new players, there is certainly no unrest within our ranks. Team spirit is at an all time high within the 1st & 2nd teams. We have learnt from our mistakes in the past. All players brought in are good characters. They are buying in to our plan & are helping us to raise the standard of cricket throughout the club. We had an U15 & U18 open the batting in the 1s on Saturday. So there are plenty of opportunities for our youth also.

As for Daz Hickey, he may play a lot of 2nd team cricket this season. This is due to family commitments & a new job. Daz no longer gets paid by the club either. It's his son Liam who has stopped playing for the county to concentrate on his basketball. He is still playing cricket for Washy though.

There are lots of things going on at Washy. All of your concerns I suppose are valid but I can assure you that all the off the pitch stuff hasn't stopped. Far from that. Very exciting times ahead for us.

I would imagine that this will be a concern not just for clubs like Washington but others as well.

I see Leadgate Under 15s were bowled out for 5 against Blaydon, who racked up 200!
NEPL cricket club officials in up their own arse shocker?
The scores are incorrect simply as the game was conceded by Leadgate and not played a fact confirmed in the local press this morning, someone in Blaydon having a bit fun I think making up scores???
Leadgate only have limited numbers at u13's & 15's' but have a good volume of 11's, but due to one reason or another (football, holidays, injury etc...) with the older players couldn't turn a team out last night its not a decision they would have taken lightly to concede. Can't expect the u11's to turn up and play against a prem league u15's.

Ah right. Thanks for clearing that up.

..and also an Under 13 playing for the second team!

I was also going to say Harry that this surely remains a concern with all clubs. It doesnt matter which club you are if you cannot or do not identify your most talented players and give them the opportunities higher up then you will lose them. I've seen even the supposed best junior setups pay the price for not doing this. There has been a couple of high profile talents left clubs recently, lads well thought of at the County, in search of more challenging cricket.

Cheers for that. Great post

I remember my da playing for washington in the years they were in the NEDL and they werent much cop if i remember correctly(must have been early 90's IIRC) - Looking the setup now you only need to see what a bit of organisation and forward thinking can do. They are a success story that many clubs in the region would do well to emulate.
