Washington have just announced that Sunderland batsman Daniel Shurben has signed for them.

This should help to fill the gap left when Lee Rushworth retired and Stephen Cuthbertson was injured for the season meaning that they had lost both of last seasons openers.

Why did Rushy retire? He didn't seem old?

Was he the Sunderland skipper? Doesnt he post on here??

Yes Dan was Sunderland first team skipper, it's a massive loss to the club as Dan is a really canny lad and a very good player who gave a lot to the club. There appears to be issues with the youth set up at Sunderland. From what I hear they are haemorrhaging players

I was talking to Rushy's dad at the T20 game on Friday and asked why Lee wasn't playing, he says Lee works for himself and puts a lot of time into it, and what with having a 2 and a half year old boy and another baby on the way he just didn't have the time.

Heard a few things re youth set up both here and in real world. Very unfortunate situation.
Btw, are you who i think you are Big Cheese? DW????

Yeah it's sad all round really a club of that stature should be a shining light of youth cricket in the area but from what I hear it's lurching from disaster to disaster and ultimately it's the kids who will lose out.

P.S

I'm not who you think I am, my initials are defiantly not D.W!

Washington really are going to be a force to be reckoned with over the next few years. Sacriston also seem to have the bit between their teeth. Heard that another team has folded its Under 11s and Under 13s - Tantobie. Shame.

Not good news. Teams with no youth set up are going to hit probs. I like Tantobie, seem to try hard to get teams out incl juniors and Sunday 3rds

Shame about Tantobie they have had juniors of some sort for about twenty years, but it never seemed to feed through to a strong first team. Always sad to see junior teams fold

Remarkable that they have any cricket teams given the size of the place!

Re Sunderland... Was told at our under 11 match yesterday that some of the junior parents had met members of the cricket commitee regards the junior set up and were told it had nothing to do with them...have to say there under 15s beat ECC tonight with 2 very poor teams on show bar maybe 4 kids!!!!

Saw an ECC team a few weeks ago at u15 and they looked very young. Seemed to be a few u11s playing.

I see Leadgate Under 15s were bowled out for 5 against Blaydon, who racked up 200!

NEPL cricket club officials in up their own arse shocker?

Anyone know why Hickey was playing for Washy seconds on Saturday? Instead of signing all these players shouldn't Washington be trying to sort their clubhouse out.

Actually interesting question that.

Didnt Washington CC have plans in to demolish their current club house and build a new one? Anyone know what happened to those plans? Is there a complication as the club dont own their own ground (owned by Sunderland City Council IIRC?). Also has one of the Hickey lads packed in playing cricket? Someone said that he had to concentrate on playing another sport....cant remember which one was stated.
