How much is going rate for a pro these days? Remember it being rumoured Philo wallace was getting about 16k at Sunderland and this must have been 18 years sgo or so.

Also what can a good shamateur expect? Cash per game or is it for runs and wickets?

Parry was one of the top paid pros in the north east while at Horden. Rumors was about 12k twenty or so year ago

Some of the quality of the amateurs getting paid now are a disgrace. No exaggeration a here but some getting paid now would have only been good second team players about 20 year ago when the senior league was very strong

Again harking back to the early 90's Horden had some superb players who were not getting a penny

As far as I am aware this half decent amateur getting paid came in when the NEPL came about

Definitely some very average players getting paid to play now, although that's hardly the players' faults.

As a side note, can anyone answer the question of where some clubs get the money? I just used to look at Kimblesworth and wonder where on earth it came from, cause their ground was shite and there was rarely anyone in the bar or watching them.

Coincidence that they went bust?

Apologies if I'm speaking completely wrong about that case because I really don't know the facts, I just used them as an example but all answers and explanations will be greatly appreciated.

Some of these NEPL clubs must be paying a fortune out

Half decent players getting paid started when the Durham Coast League banned overseas players. The clubs started paying decent Senior League players to go into the Coast League. Then Senior League clubs had to do something to stop them leaving. It has developed from there really.

I take it that was the start of the decline of local cricket then. Mind you I bet my subs bought you a few beers mind:cool:;)

Its such a shame that NE cricket had ended up this way.

The bar did used to do pretty well, but there was always one bloke who tended to bankroll much of the cricket side of things. As could easily happen at quite a few clubs he pulled the plug on the cash, and owing to the neglect of the junior side of things they were left with next to nothing when the mercenaries cleared off.

Yes. This is the way it went! Now every kid who has scored a fifty expects payment.

Thanks for clearing that up mate. You're right like, could happen anywhere in terms of a rich benefactor.

Yeah I have no problems with clubs spending a few quid on good players, but the thing I genuinely hate is the neglect that seems to follow on lower level sides and junior sections.

Take Swalwell in the NTSL. They had a good 7 or 8 on the payroll, with the other 3 tending to make up the numbers. They spent an absolute fortune and fair play, they won a load of trophies, but when is the last time they brought a junior through the system into the 1st team. I certainly can't remember one in recent years. They need to be careful as once the money dries up it could quickly become a cow field.

I remember about 20 years ago Chilton Moor who were only in NDL were paying their opening batsman.

Where was the ground? Always assumed it was on that patch of wasteland next to that kindergarten/nursery

Im not 100% familiar with that area but its probably where your thinking of. If you turn off right next to the ground and follow the road then you arrive at Chilton country club if that helps

Swalwell have got a decent U15s coming through by all accounts, I think they've stopped neglecting that side.

Not sure why the doom and gloom about the local scene. It's pretty good IMO, just the creation of the NEPL has concentrated the talent in one league.

Chiltin Moors old ground is still an empty field behind the nursery, the nursery used to be the bar for the last few seasons they still had a club.

There's a single tree growing in the middle of what would have been the square.

There were originally 2 cricket clubs in Chilton-Moor and Colliery. Moor certainly played on the road leading to the Country Club- maybe the housing development is where the Colliery club played.

I agree with this and would love to have a first team full of lads that have come through the junior set-up. My club has paid players - only 1 or 2 a season - for about 20 years now. We have had lads come through but not many sadly. We encourage young lads and the majority of the 2nd team is young lads but not many are good enough to make the step up to the 1st team. We recruit from other clubs when we have a specific requirement. The best part of that is that the new players are made to feel welcome and not may leave - we become their club. We have had lads go into the Bradford & Yorkshire Leagues and some have come back to play for us.

We do not have a rich benefactor and we raise the funds ourselves.
