Ash Thorpe as well as Playing for Washy coaches quite a few of the county junior squads down at the riverside.... My lad says his crack is amazing and he really encourages the kids and brings out the best in them..

The three West Indians I mentioned were quality players but the point I am trying to make is that I felt that Steve Russell was the best because he could influence or change the game when batting or bowling. I have seen Steve take apart most bowling attacks and if he failed with the bat he did it with the ball. Adams or Lambert couldn't and Parry in my opinion just wasn't as good or as destructive.
Russell did ok in the NYSD - it was after all his first year over here and the others all took time to adapt as well. Ironically the quickest bowler I faced at Billingham Synthonia was Gary Pallister not Russell as Steve ambled in off about three paces and took a couple of wickets with his slower ball! He did though put one into the road over the trees so the point about him only doing it onsmaler grounds isn't quite true!
McLeod just never tried when I played against him so although he was quick at times it was the odd ball or so. Keith Chapman ran in and bent his back on a road at Hetton Lyons and the ball was carrying to Richie Lowes (I think) standing way back.
Kevin Ivan's was the Aussie - I thought he played only one year over here and if he did he played in the Presidents game at Ryhope that year against TSL who had Madan Lal and Wes Thomas. He was also crap if I remember!
On another note I saw Tom Moody throw a ball from in front of the pavillion at the Lyons across the roof of the score board in a rain affected match - some achievement. I also played in a game against Normanby Hall looking forward to the game as Lamby had gone home injured- out walked Phil Symons instead!
Sunderland also replaced their pro just before we played them as well, some crap South African went home to be replaced by Mushtaq Ahmed - I have never seen anyone spin a ball in local cricket like him.
I watched Horden loads of times during the Parry era and that is simply wrong and he played at a higher standard to in what was a very strong senior league back then. When he wanted Parry was a hugely destructive batsman. The main strength of Parry was that he was not a flash player and played very much for the team. If required he was more than happy to knock it about for one or twos if the situation arose where there was no need to be flash. He was not the type of player to show off and go for shots that were not necessary to the score they were chasing.

Sunderland had a pro called kirty azad anyone remember him? Can remember him smashing Steve greensword over the rugby stand on a fair few occasions he was quite a dangerous batsman
Yeah mentioned him in a earlier post, sure he broke the senior league record for runs scored in a season while he was there.
Matter of opinion - no doubt others will say the pros they played with or against were better!
Quite a few times - never ever did it when I played against him. Mate i don't doubt his ability as he played there for so long and his record and reputation is renowned. However all I can comment upon is what I witnessed. I used to find his bowling so predictable BUT this was in cup ties not the league when people were around the bat.Out of interest how man times did you see Parry play?

In fact it was the other West Indian who did us a couple of times one season - can't remember his name but Parry did nothing.
