I'm backing Poyet.

I definitely got the impression considering his team selection and his comments after the match, (which more or less led with the concept that now the cup is out of the way, we can concentrate on the Prem), that Gus didn't really want to win the match. Remember that when he made the selection, Arsenal and Man City were both still in it, and we have a fixture pile-up to face. I reckon at some level an executive decision has been made not to risk too much to win the match.

Thinking the same now, if so its a bloody shambles. No sense of history or respect for the game.

one thing for sure the euphoria and confidence has been drained in 7 days , i hope to hell the club doesnt capitulate . Can feel the nerves jangling already from many fans myself included , i think Poyets carefree attitude to Sundays game rubbed off on the players who hardly need an excuse to hide , let battle commence !

So you reckon he was lying when he said Wes is carrying a knock and hasn't trained all week?
and
Do you think he just pretended to get angry on the touchline with the stewards in a cunning bit of play acting to fool us all into thinking he wanted to win?

I think he started to realise he'd fucked up with his team selection and he couldn't trust his 2nd string players after all.

I back Poyet and think he's great.

But he fucked up yesterday. And deserves criticism for it.

You can back him generally and criticise him for individual events and that's what I'm doing re yesterday.

I don't think anyone's turning on him and the vast majority think he's the best manager we've had for many a long year. BUT:

Yesterday was a chance for us to turn an exciting season into a once in a lifetime event while building on the Cup Final and getting real momentum for the league games.

When will we ever have the chance again? All the home draws, the way most of the top teams have conspired to get themselves knocked out - I don't expect to have that luck again anytime soon.

So will I be delighted as we head towards mid-table next season? Of course, but this was a chance to put something in the record books that generations to come would still talk about.

Poyet had no choice of course - he is paid to do what he did yesterday. But you can't expect the fans to see it as anything other than an incredible opportunity thrown away.

Good post marra. I see it differently to you, but you make a good case.[DOUBLEPOST=1394485315][/DOUBLEPOST]
Sensible people will agree with every word. I Agree with every word

Oh fuck.

I take it all back.

Which game would you prioritise - the Semi, or Everton at home?

You can't prioritise both.

I would see where we are after the Spurs game then think about it.

If we then were in the bottom 4 with 2 league games in 7 days after the semi you play an under strength side, which could well be enough to beat a league 1 side. If we have added 10 pts and are looking safe we go for it in the semi. Everyone would understand an understrength side being picked in the former circumstances.

All hypothetical coz GP tossed it away yesterday, during an oh so punishing run of a game a week, where some of our better players have played as many as 1,2 or 3 games in a month. It could have easily been managed.

That is why I am still angry and upset at yesterday's mismanagement. Admittedly Poyets only mistake so far but it's a whopper, IMO.

And the Final?

Say we need a point at home to Swansea, and we have Arsenal in the final. It has been proven time and time again that a forthcoming cup final proves a huge distraction in the league. Which game to you prioritise?

You are just making up scenarios though. What if we win every game between now and the final? What if we are already down.
Surely it's better to be able to make decisions based on what's actually happening at the time.

What's happens if we won at Hull then Rod Steiger takes David Cameron hostage and fucks him with a barbed wire boxing glove and insists all football must be stopped or children will die?

What happens if Borini gets injured and we have the difficult run in games we have to conclude the season? These are the very REAL scenarios Poyet HAS to plan for, and he did at an optimal time by playing Scocco and Fletcher. What he could NOT plan for was the catastrophic fuck up that was Cattermole with 15 mins to go.

Luckily for us Poyet isn't as flippant as you and has the foresight we need.

What if? What if? What if?
We were f***ing shit on Sunday due to team selection

What if borini plays and scores a hat trick? What if Johnson leads the hull back 4 a merry dance in a scintillating performance?
Does that not help our cause?

So what you're saying is that you HOPE that Borini stays fit and keeps scoring. Hope? Hope? Hope...? because we clearly can't rely on Altidore and we only have Fletcher and Scocco to fill that role with some of the toughest fixtures possible still ahead. We may have be shit but it was 0-0 with our top scorers coming on until Mr. (I'm in the strongest starting 11 ) Cattermole fucked it up.[DOUBLEPOST=1394529808][/DOUBLEPOST]

Your scenario relys on us not playing Fletcher and Scocco who we need to give as much game time too as possible. You're living in a fantasy land if you think we/Poyet can afford to leave their inclusion any later.

I have not mentioned Borini though, you have. I am not using your words to state my case.
We should have played our best team and had a f***ing go.

Why? Play borini on the left then. What about ki? Did we have to give larsson, cattermole and colback games as well?
Look he picked a weakened team, I and many others think it was a mistake and something I don't want to see from my club in a quarter final. You clearly disagree just in case something bad happens.

And something and did happen, we were stuffed and have just chucked a massive chance of European qualification in the bin.
What happens if player X pulls up with a hamstring in the 1st minute versus Palace?

When you bang on about the strongest team you ARE including Borini, or are you suggesting he isn't in that 11? The manager HAS to plan for what ifs, he would be remiss not to. Reckless abandon isn't viable, he needs the opportunity to get Fletcher and Scocco match fit and this was one of them. It was perfectly executed until Cattermole decided to implode.[DOUBLEPOST=1394530897][/DOUBLEPOST]

..and if Borini does get injured or Fletcher? They may be whatifs but that is what you plan for. Hope is for dreamers, not managers.

It wasn't perfectly executed, had we even had a shot?

Not sure how picking someone to play a game of football a week is classed as reckless abandon.
