"Today you need your x-factor players, your mavericks and different personalities, because people express themselves at a whole new level. You don't need robots. In fact you cannot have robots any more. If you're going to win things you're going to have to give these mavericks a leash and allow them to perform."

Nail on head. Team was full of them under Fletcher. Now only two or three at best.

I think Colly is being slightly disingenuous though. I cant think of any x factor players at Durham. However I do know of x factor players who were peddled by Durham. the cricket club has a system and stepping outside of it is invariably frowned upon. Be interesting to know what he actually means by a maverick player. If he means Pietersen then what I'd say is that his being a maverick was tolerated because he was such a good player. However he never really sat easy with the English cricketing establishment in recent years. He's now been ditched because essentially they dont know how to handle him. Shame really. I just wonder if a strict disciplinarian like Colly would have Pietersen at DCCC (if we could afford him that is)?

There aren't many in County cricket full stop, but Ben Stokes is one.

Actually that is a fair point. Ben has got himself into all sorts of trouble in durham and with England, publically reported; been carpeted but because of his ability it is to a degree turned a blind eye to and/or tolerated.

TBF colly ill hardly have had much input in player transactions until now

That is a very interesting question. Whilst reading that it seemed to be a pretty big 'we need players like KP in our team' message. Then suddenly it was very pro the ECB's decision making, which may simply be him not wanting to talk himself out of a job potentially, or may be really how he feels. Like we've all always thought, you'll never really know the truth.

re X factor players it really depends, by x factor i just think he means exciting prospects who can win you a match with an outstanding performance but you don't always know what you'll get.. you could easily argue ontop of stokes that borthwick, mustard, possibly woody & arshad fit into this catergory - even muchall [in one day stuff] or breesy

I read it as a polite criticism of the decision to drop KP.

agreed. like i said it seemed like he started off by saying we need our best players playing then suddenly realised he was criticising the ecb and started trying to back track..

Well we have been even more successful than we were under Fletcher. So there you go.

Not professional enough to keep it up for a sustained period.
Think that just applied to Flintoff and to a lesser extent Harmison. Couldn't legislate for what happened to Trescothwick and Jones, Vaughan had a lot of injury troubles after that series too.
