It wasn't a case of lack of finances that led to Benky leaving, it was the fact that Jon Lewis got the 1st team coaching job.

It would have been harsh on jon lewis if he hadnt got the gig. I am sure money will be a factor, he won't be. on the same dough as benks and his ability to get the most out of kids will be a factor for a club on the bones of its arse.

at the time of harmy being offered that contract there was no sign of this financial ruin we were on our way to and i don't think you can blame anyone for signing a contract that is offered to them, you would assume if it was on the table the club had done their due diligence and could afford to make the offer.
the club were about to offer benks the coaching of the t20 side so you have to assume they intended to keep him on. unfortunate timing for all concerned with regards to geoff cook's heart attack, madness to try and turn it round as harmison's fault.

I'm not a Harmison fan and think what has gone on at Durham has been anything but right. However I've been told by a very reliable source that its not really his fault. It looks like its the ECB's fault.
When he and Colly lost their ECB Central Contracts they were due a pay off. Because they were being paid by the ECB and available for Durham when not required by England (which was not very often) then the County that they returned to had to pay the pay off. The figure for each player was 600,000. This was then given at 149,500 per year for 4 years so each player did not pay a higher rate of tax and also it spread the cost on the club.
This is also the reason why Durham gave Colly permission to speak with Derbyshire a few years ago to try and reduce the financial burden on the club.
It would all of gone without a problem if Harmy had performed like Colly has over the last few years but it make a laughing stock of DCCC the way he has gone about it. The one thing I cannot get my head around is why DCCC gave him a benefit year last season. That too was probably due to contractual factors and not by choice.

Portsmouth players took IOU's and few of them had any sentimemtal links with the club.
He was within his rights to take his money, just as Durham CCC and their supporters are to regard him as a mercenary rather than a local legend.

it is a farcial system really, when you can have a salary cap [fair enough] but if players representing england can suddenly have their contracts cut and return to our wage system with little or no notice. most sporting teams will run as close to the cap as possible to ensure they are competitive - to suddenly lump on a superstar [in cricketing terms] or two on superstar wages makes a mockery of any attempt to run a salary structure.
TBF harmy spent a good deal of that time injured and colly, whilst no doubt being a model pro [one assumes] and a great captain has underperformed with the bat being brutally honest [playing devil's advocate there, i appreciate what colly has done/does for us and harmy has been on the way out for a number of years]
giving big deals to harmison, plunkett and blackwell seem awful moves in hindsight but seemed at least reasonable[ish] at the time

And when he pissed his england career away because got homesick for ashington. That was great too. A phenomenal Natural talent who will ultimately be remembered as second fiddle to flintoff, and up there with veritable giants of English cricket like Matthew Hoggard and Andy caddick.
