We have had this thread before but its been a while and you normally get some good stories so why not have it again eh

Being biased but Derek Parry at Horden up there with the best I have seen. Remember getting my Duncan Fearnly signed by Richie Richardson when he played for Burnmoor at Horden. Clayton Lambert was a bit of a mercenary but have seen him do some serious damage over the years

My mate Anth who I go to the match with got Richardson out caught at point with his gentle away swingers.

Lambert was a hoot batting with his Walkman in stopping the bowler in his tracks to change the tape around in his Walkman. Used to commentate as well at times. "The great white hope comes in bowls to Lambert, too short 4 ruuuuuns!!!"

We had a nightmare against him. So bad he came out and coached us during tea!

Former Player will have loads of memories of this sort of era.

Cairns was at Whitburn mid to late 70's. Zak Khan was accepted as being one of the most horrible fuckers going.

I thought Richie Richardson was at Gateshead Fell but my memory fades.

Andy Glasgow was a top lad who played at South Hylton I think.

Moody broke the coast league run record I think when he was at the Lyons.

Wasim Akram played at Burnopfield I think and didn't Madan Lal play somewhere.

Murton (I think) had a cracking lad called Paul Henhsall (Aussie) play for them

Zakir Khan was a horrible big headed twat. He was quick mind. Remember when I smashed him all over when we played against him at Silksworth. Hit him out the ground, over the road and into the ski slope. Haha 89no and hit him for 7 6's which he was going mad about. Then when we fielded had a hat trick and he was the hat trick ball. Didn't like it but his middle peg was removed.

Tom Moody was a superb player and what a nice lad. Madan Lal played for Felling, Courtney Walsh played for Tynedale, Derek Parry was outstanding at Horden mind.

Richie Richardson played for Gateshead Fell when he first came over and then moved to Burnmoor. Played against him for Eppleton 8 times in one season and got him out every time with his highest score being 25. Mind it was a damp summer and none of the pitches were covered. He was the world No 1 rated batsmen at the time !!!

Jimmy Adams was an outstanding PRO when he came to play with us at Eppleton. One of the nicest guys you could wish to meet and not a bad cricketer as well. Still very good friends with him today. Went to Jamaica in 1994 to see him play his 1st game against England. Stayed with his parents and I was looked after like a king.

If i remember right did Tom Moody not go in the back whilst playing for Hetton Lyons and could only bat for most of the season. Damien Martyn at Gateshead Fell of all the top overseas players was the most stylish i have seen.

Damian Martin played at North Durham when he first came over as a young kid. Came over with Mike Hursch. Some player even then.

I do remember you putting him over the ski slope (but couldn't remember it was you that did it, sorry). Phil Symons (West Indies) was another, played for Norton or Guisborough I think. On tv he looked quite pedestrian compared to the 4 front line quicks but he could sling them down if required. Murton played them in one of the cups at Blackhall and made the mistake of getting him out cheap. He was stotting them down. One of the lads had a wickies pad under his shirt when he was batting. Those midweek cup games could be a nightmare if you were batting second and a giant West Indian was charging in at 8.45 p.m. Actually thinking about it, fielding could be worse.

Phil Simmons played one year at Guisborough. Geoff Boycott called him "the medium pacer" when he bowled for the West Indies but when he wanted to he was quick and aggressive.
Earlier in the season Stockton had declared at something like 77-7 as they did not want their tailenders facing Simmons !
I remember the semi-final with Murton. Keith Chapman, in his 4 over spell, got rid of Guisborough's top three, Simmons, Bolton and Hutton.
Murton, batting second were cruising to victory so Simmons came on to bowl off about 3 paces. He was still bloody quick !!
One of the Murton batters ran off the field to grab a helmet, saying something like "I would shit myself if he was fully fit" !
For the record Murton went on to win the game.[DOUBLEPOST=1391166717][/DOUBLEPOST]The most consistent pro during 70's and 80's was, no doubt, Steve Greensword. 1,000 runs and 50-70 wickets year in and year out.
Derek Parry was a wonderful player who stayed loyal to Horden and made a decent side a league and cup winning side for a number of years.
My favourite though, was Clayton Lambert. Generally in not so good sides he just kept scoring massive runs. He broke records of people who played much more Test Cricket than him. His fielding was brilliant and his bowling was more than decent. Added to this was his character, always smiling and singing. He murdered good quality professional bowlers, even on some poor cricket wickets.

Yeah remember that,in fact North Durham had the cheek to play him for their second team in a cup tie under a different name,which their were then rightly chucked out of that cup.

With the likes Of John Pendlington, Steven Ward, Paul Matthews, Paul Hill, Stuart Wilson in the side to Horden were more than a decent side tbf, tended to bat all the way down to 10

Keith played for years. He was quick in his prime and difficult to play on Murton's 'unpredictable' wicket. Is he still around? The Guisborough game was 1990. What a summer that was. The Lads got promoted after losing at Wembley, Italia 90 and cricket 3-4 times a week. Great weather as well.

Alec Johnson at Whitburn in the 70s was as quick as anything locally. Former Notts player - rated the fastest in the country at one time.

The first season he was there he didn't take many wickets early doors, they were thinking of sacking him, and then we played them in the Saunders Cup - he bowled us out for 30-odd and took 8-13. I got to know him because he came down to Roker for treatment off Johnny Watters, the Alders were very good friends of John. The next season we played them again, in the Smith-Humphries (?). I was talking to him the day before and he said that he would take it easy on us as we had saved his contract. He came off 4 paces and bowled us out for 40odd and took 6-10! He always had a soft spot for Dawdon CWCC.

When I ran in to bowl he was singing along to the music on his walkman, batting to the beat of the music. He scored 148no out of Blackhall's total of about 170. When we batted we were 60 for 5 when the heavens opened and the game was abandoned. W went back the next week and I bowled him off the 1st ball of the game. David Greener then chirped up "we didn't get to the chorus tonight Clayton" then "f*** off man" was the reply. We bowled them out for 40 odd and knocked it off without loosing a wicket.

Well as far as can remember mate (could be wrong) but there was only Keith myself and one other person (probably you) who played both times in York,so you could probably guess,but if you are who I think you are,I opened the batting with you,mainly watching from the non strikers end while you smashed the bowling all over.

Phil Simmons is now the coach of the ireland team and a lovely fella he is!
