Being biased but Derek Parry at Horden up there with the best I have seen. Remember getting my Duncan Fearnly signed by Richie Richardson when he played for Burnmoor at Horden. Clayton Lambert was a bit of a mercenary but have seen him do some serious damage over the years

I heard this story once that when Lance Gibbs was pro at Whitburn in sixties, he was told by West Indies not to damage fingers cos they had a tour in Australia coming up. So he took it easy...and still took 120 wickets in the league.

Parry was awesome really top professional on and off the field a true gentlemen,as for Lambert he was simply just a run machine

Remember playing against Richardson once and he was caught behind of a no ball for a duck,big mistake as went on to make 156 against us.

Same year Tom Moody played at Hetton Lyons and Zakir Khan played at South Hetton.

Lance Cairns at Whitburn 1978. Very laid back although I played a beautiful cover drive off him in the nets and he said "nice shot mate", you never forget things like that.

Then he left to join the NZ touring party and we had

, a completely different regime, 9am Sunday morning for 3 solid hours coaching for us juniors, fielding practice in front of the sprinklers so if you missed it you got soaked, and catching practice with balls hit so high they came down with snow on. Favourite saying "I would never have got away with a stroke like that when I were playing against Australia".

Moody was only 19 I think when at Hetton Lyons,other top class internationals were pros in local leagues including Aussies Damien Marytn and Marcus North at Gateshead Fell,South African Andrew Hall played at Burnmoor,and Desmond Haynes played for a couple of seasons at Blackhall.

Was he the fast bowler? I only played a few games for Murton first's but one was away at South Hetton. They had a Pakistani pro who was rapid. I lasted 3 or 4 balls, heard them but did not see them. Think I walked on an lbw. What about Anderson Cummins? He was quick. Famous for when the Windies selectors left him out of the team for his home test (Jamaica?) and the locals decided on a boycoutt. Their banner read "No Cummins, no goings".

Pretty sure Lance Cairns played for Bishop Auckland somewhere down the line. Can remember him putting someone over the grandstand at Horden and it landed in the center circle

Couldn't agree more - batting at no 10, he bounced me when they needed 2 wickets to win off one ball (the ****).

No helmet, just a box and flimsy thigh pad in them days !

Obviously used to rolling teams over and couldn't hack it when batsman dug in.

I played against all those Coast League pro's you've mentioned and remember Raman Lamba being pretty good when he was at Felling - unfortunately he was killed by a cricket ball when fielding at short leg back in India, I think.

Paul Henshall was topper! Hit the best 20 over innings I have seen at the MCG. Great in the bar and for the community too. Was from Perth.

Yes really good lad, loved a night out on the sauce down the town. I think he used to crash in the clubhouse to save his money.

He ended up on me mam and dads settee on more than one occasion after a night out, where he often had the company of a slobbering Labrador. He came back over a few years later (to see the ashes I think) and I believe his brother was playing in one of the Lancashire leagues. He looked me dad up which was nice of him.

Most of them used to come over from the southern hemisphere in our summer as at the time there was generally no international cricket at that time anywhere other than England!!

Heath Streak was at Durham City I think, Brad Hogg at Plawsworth, the late Wasim Raja played at a good few clubs, Rameez Raja at South Moor.

Phil Symons (West Indies) was another, played for Norton or Guisborough I think. On tv he looked quite pedestrian compared to the 4 front line quicks but he could sling them down if required. Murton played them in one of the cups at Blackhall and made the mistake of getting him out cheap. He was stotting them down. One of the lads had a wickies pad under his shirt when he was batting. Those midweek cup games could be a nightmare if you were batting second and a giant West Indian was charging in at 8.45 p.m. Actually thinking about it, fielding could be worse.
