Cheap and cheerful backup wicky

Looks ideal for getting the beers in

what is it with us and international wicket keeping relatives?

There's something about the term 'Ireland wicketkeeper' that gets my cynical head on![DOUBLEPOST=1390598757][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh and I thought Will Smith was retiring??

aye all the crack was he was moving into race horses and the next day he signed for hampshire. a more stable job opportunity i guess.

This. His tenure at Durham can be described as odd at best.
He is ,at best, a journeyman cricketer who has a highish first class average from a relatively small no (80)of first class games spread over 16 years. After promising much as a youngster ( see Cricinfo report below)he has tried his hand in SA ,NZ and now England. He first went to Hants but did not last long, disappointed at Durham and has persuaded Somerset that he is worth a punt at the ripe old age of 33 after a stint in club cricket 'down south' playing for Sutton CC in southwest London .
"Johannes Myburgh is another cricketer that has been lost from the South African system, but instead of the common path to England he has opted for New Zealand as his career option. He has been earmarked to take the place of recently retired Nathan Astle at the top of the Canterbury order after limited opportunities for the Titans. He was a batting prodigy at school in Pretoria and broke Graeme Pollock's record for the youngest scorer of a double century in South African first-class cricket as a 17-year-old in 1997-98. He holds a strong average of 41.77, is an occasional off-spinner and a good fielder."
The Somerset coach's assessment says it all. They expect him to fight.
Somerset's director of cricket Dave Nosworthy, also South African, said: "Mybs is a quality person and a quality professional cricketer. His track record speaks for itself (80 fc games in 16years )and I have no doubt that his experience and expertise will add massive value and depth to the team.
"He is coming to the club with no guarantees or any expectations, so I look forward to him fighting his way into contention. I have worked with Mybs before and know what he has to offer, so look forward to him performing and also to everyone making him feel as welcome as possible."

I was surprised that durham even looked at him after his stint at Hants ended but then Durham were getting desperate looking for batsmen at a reasonable cost when they took him on.
