Durham Cricket League 2014

If it's true it is very sad. Seeing a cricket club go is always disappointing but let's hope they are just moving leagues. I think losing so many good players will take it's toll.

Hylton CC have reported/repeated this on twitter. Thought the plan was for them to play in NEDL.
Is a club likely to replace them?

It's definitely true - was speaking to a League exec member last night. Apparently they do not have enough players now that the money has dried up and the mercenaries have left. Free week in Div 1 next year, two up from Div 2 but now only one down from Div 1.

The spare place in Div 2 will be advertised for 2015. I'll get you a form Gregg.....

It's never good to see a club go (although I'm hearing they haven't gone fully, just in to NEDL). From our perspective we'll go about out business as per plans on the field and off it with new pavilion etc and we'll see what comes about.

Having spoken to a couple of individuals that know out ambitions and what our development plan states so we'll be striving to achieve what we set out.

However, you say there'll be a place Pingu, what about Shildon going to NYSD too? Surely that leaves 2 spares?

But indeed keep an eye out for any apps going about ;) I'm sure the cricket board who we are working closely with will be backing our corner whatever our plans are...

Should a place become available this season (which doesnt seem to be the case) the best placed club in the NEDL to go up currently are Beamish. Not the greatest square but they have everything else in place and they won the NEDL last season so would be most deserving IMO.

I suppose it all depends on wether these clubs actually want promotion. I know of at least one club who have won the NEDL and refused promotion.

Of course. But everything Beamish have done over the past couple of seasons suggests they are wanting to progress. Sorted out their sight screens and scoreboard (think they have covers also but not 100% on that), have a junior section and have won the league. They also have a decent bar which has been busy every time Ive been through, and have also put themselves forward to host cup finals and monthly league meetings. They dont strike me as wanting to maintain the status quo.

From speaking to the beamish 1st team captain at the end of our game last season they have plans to progress.

Should be a interesting season in our league, I can think of at least 4 teams that will, if the opportunity arises like to move forward. Should make for some competitive cricket. Looking forward to it

All about infrastructure, from facilities, equipment, playing both senior & junior, clubmark, quality of ground and even finances will come into it as well as recommendation from Durham board.

As far as I can see only Beamish in the whole of the NEDL have all the requirements at present. Other clubs have a lot of work to do. But let's not forget there may be clubs from Tyneside Senior League that may fancy a change, clubs like wickham who have played in coast league years gone by, or lintz, hebburn, maybe lanchester... Maybe clubs from NYSD?

Who knows what will happen but there'll be 2 places in the DCL in 2015 with the spaces creates by Kimblesworth and Shildon. Those 2 places will be filled by the best 2 candidates who undoubtedly need to go through a stringent process to be accepted.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on who the 4 would be from NEDL would be Matt?

Just to add it won't be promotion either, so even if Beamish didn't finish top they would still hold precedence over others in that league at present...

The 4 I would have thought would be interested would be yourselves. Ourselves. Beamish and Hunwick. Based on what I know from 3 of those clubs, and the facilities already in place, if they were to be accepted is a question for the league committee.
But I can't see anyone else being able to apply on current facilities and structures.

Hmmm, I didn't anticipate Hunwick mind. To be fair if you were going by letter of the law that I was provided by DCB when I asked for criteria (just for theory sake), then actually there has been no criteria written since the Holland report. So if you look at old Durham County League, Coast League and Senior League then only on facilities there would be more clubs than those mentioned would qualify right now. There's no mention of electricity, showers etc other than in the desirable column.

I've no doubt that the new DCL management committee will work with DCB to establish new ground criteria, not only that but also everything else I mentioned in the post above.

There's no TS5 compliant facilities currently anywhere in NEDCL, however there's a challenge that could lie whereby any club applying could maybe have their facilities possibly matched like for like against facilities already in that league? Interesting debate really. I know that clubs need to have rollers etc available at HT for example, I know I never got asked that once as captain last year... There's a lot that all of those clubs you mention would have to get in order in my eyes (ourselves fully included in that).

That is why we have the plans fully drawn up for new pavilion which will be fully TS5 compliant, something we endeavour to start the build by the end of 2014. Not saying that we will have or will apply as there is a lot to sort out. However with a proper groundsman on board now, a decent winter, having roll on covers as well as sheet covers, sight screens, light push and heavy sit on rollers, the temp bar and tea room (albeit interim), we have facilities already that match and in some instances out doo those that are already at a higher level.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying we would apply or even get accepted but starting the Clubmark process and having backing of ECB and DCB I think that would be the direction we are pushed in by those governing bodies.

For us, we now need to make sure we get things right on the pitch this year. As you say it'll be a very interesting season for all not just in NEDCL but also within all other local leagues. Local cricket is still very much in a transition phase and looks likely to be for sometime yet...

I wasnt suggesting Beamish as such but there has been the option of promotion to at least the durham coast league for a number of years and the only team i can remember getting promotion was whiteleas(who accepted an invitation to the new league). To me that suggests the teams that did win the NEDCL over the last few years werent interested in getting promotion. Maybe a case of wanting to be a big fish in a little pond??

There is certainly teams with that view point in the NEDL, which is there prerogative I guess.

I do think most clubs are starting to realise that there is a opportunity to progress there club, and are taking steps to do so.

And that should hopefully make for more competitive cricket all round, which is what everyone wants.

Good luck for the new season mate - are houghton entering 2 teams this year?
